Mr. Reiner`s sermon in the evening was based on the 8th verse of the 3rd chapter of St. Matthew: " Bring forth good fruits therefore meet for repentance. It was an exceptionally good one, and was listened to with marked attention. The music was, as usual, of a very high crder, the anthem being. I heard a voice." CHRIST CHURCH. Rev`. W.` Miller Magrath, Rector in charge, conducted the usual services in this church on Sunday last, preaching both morning and evening. In the morning the text was the 42nd verse of thel3th chap. of St. Matthew : Gospel,--- What think ye of Christ ?" This question was considered both in its relations to the Jews, to whom it was addressed. and alsototheprofessed followers of Christ in "the present age. In closing the preacher urged on his hearers the necessity of an immediate and personal acceptance of the Saviour. ' _,AI ,L,_L _,__Ll_,t\1,L , ' IHUUIIWIJ W. IIIRI SIIJIJ CU IICCUII The evening sermon was Heb. 6, 19, Which hope we haveas an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which en- tereth` into that within the vail. No nobler spectacle than the faith of Abraham in the promise of things unseen and in the distant future, when the rest of the world believed only in that which they could see, feel or weigh, and measure. This faith and hope is the only thing that can act as a safe anchor to the soul. which is surrounded by worldly currents tending to sweep it to perdition. Reason, pride, covetousness, or even the voice of conscience, is not sufficient to pro- tect us from the storms of passion. The snre signs of drifting are the giving up of religious duties oneafteranother, absence from prayer meeting, absence from church, feeding too long on one sermon. COLLIER STREET METHODIST CHURCH. The pastor occupied the pulpit at both services. `In the morning he continued his course of doctrinal sermons, his text being, . Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. By quotations and incidents it was shown that great prominence was given to taith both in the Old and New Testament scriptures. Jnstifying faith. was shown to consist of the union of two elements; the first being an assentto certain truths. such as._ God's existence, God a lawgiver, mans. sinner, the atonement, the possibility of being saved." ` This is; not `a blind unintelligent as- sent, for `facts are presented and proofs are given, as avbasis.of- faith. This element of faith is msnitestod in eve day life. Educa- tion ll based upon, an so is legitimate business. The choir of Christ Church is attaining a. high degree of eioiency, which reflects much credit on its able leader, Mr. W. J. Conlter. At the evening services the sacred solo, Keep me safely to the end, was most tonchingly sung by Miss Hanmer, who is the fortunate possessor of an alto voice of great swieetnelss. , !, D.__,-,_L!_-, _ Al.___ _I__ A, ,, `II-IIIIUI-I UL JHIIKICIIIL WIUIIUIIU IIIIU AUVIIIQIIIBIII ofthe Ritualists. McLeod took as his morning subject, Phil., 1, 21, For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. One of the `faults of the age is to think of men and to deal with them collectively instead of in- dividually. The Sabbath School teacher who merely teaches his class, but does not think of any individual of his class fails to do his duty. The salvation of a single soul is a matter of great importance. In the family this individual oversight is very, necessary. The parent who takes a stroll or goes to sleep in the afternoon. and sends the children to the Sabbath School as a matter of routine, without looking any further after their spiritual welfare, is neglecting a sacred duty. The history of the world clusters round a few great names such as Howard Shakespeare and Livingstone. The Lord of glory coming down, from heaven to a low- ly. position on this earth, teaches us how vain and foolish is human pride and how precious is the soul of the poorest and the- most despised. The first clause of the verse teaches the divinity of Christ, the second teacheefthat the souls of the righteous do im- mediately pass` into gloryat death. Rev. Mr. German at Indiana. The anniversary services of the Methodist Church, Midland, were held on Sunday March 9th. The Rev. J, F. German M. A., chairman of the Barrie District, preached morning and evening, two very thoughtful and practical sermons. In the morning very clearly and forcibly showing the duty of christians in regard to the first claims of God upon them. He being Great Capitalist, hav- ing provided the means wherewith to get money. In the evening the subject was the unity of the church of God, and clearly il- lustrating and proving that unity did not necessarily include uniformity. Both ser- mons were listened to with profound interest by the congregations. On Monday evening Mr. German gave a very interesting lecture on Shams. The audience listened with unabated interest for over an hour to the lecturer as he unfolded this subject. The lecture was full of striking anecdotes and sparkling illustrations which made it highly entertaining as well as instructive.-Midland Free Press. '1 I103!
