The Examiner is mistaken. THE ADVANCE has neither sought to besmirch Mr. Bird s reputation nor cast slurs on that gentleman. What THE ADVANCE has done is to protest against the indefensible system of one man being clerk, collector and treas- urer, and which Mr. Bird's friends fought so persistently to perpetuate. The two large balances which the examination of Mr. Bird s books show to be due to him we pointed to as justifying our contention that s a change was imperatively necessary. THE ADVANCE designated the bookkeeping bad which showed balances in favor of the book. keeper amounting to $1065.28, and which the bookkeeper says is not due to him. Our ference but. will it venture to call it good bookkeeping? Would any business rm in this town or anywhere else be satised with a system showing such discrepancies? We. think not. The Examiner says : The diffi- culty was not so much with the accounts of the past three or four years but anterior to these dates, although they had been duly certied to as being correct by auditors ap- I pointed by the then civic boards. n- 1-A-5-----H ' shirts; we are brady & moore ffalw "a 11 --,_.-..._-- --u-- vu.vvu - 1 T *Free:Met%"odioh. have me6ting_1u 1:he Tempernnca L: . , -= J.
