One farmer's wife, who has been attending the market for many years. said she never saw the roads worse at this season. There was but little of anything offered and prices remained as` they were the week before, with the exce - tion of butter. In consequence of the litt e in the market, sellers asked 30 cents aponnd, and a few rolls went at that price. Some persons in town are selling eggs at 20 cents while others ask 18 cents a dozen.` As soon as the roads permit of farmers reaching town these exceptional prices will not be asked or given. -:1--O00?--- Hustler at `any rat- hots uid! an tenable. If a few months have been allow- ed to elapse since its construction, doors will be noticed not to close tightly, the wood work is shrunken, the window sashes do not move easily, _ and too frequently the founda- tions have settled and the walls cracked. These remarks apply to tenements in cities, but they will apply well to a certain class of houses put up "to rent in Canadian towns. What we want here are good substantial houses with the rooms large and the ceilings high, large enough for four or ve persons, and built with the View of convenience to the occupant, and rent that will pay eight or nine per cent. `on the actual cost, which would be quite suicient to cover the depre- ciation of value from use. People come into town lookingvfoi this class of residences, but fail to nd them. It is not mere apologies for houses put up simply to rent, having no regard to the comfort of the "occupant or to sanitary conditions. Building mere shells with small, cramped up rooms and void of conveniences, do not full the conditions which such houses require, and when the rent of such buildings is a -fair interest on double the capital invest- ed in them, they become little better than frauds on the people who are compelled, for lack of something better, to live in them. In the essay of Dr. Vaughn on Healthy Homes. etc.," he says many houses are now built purposely to rent or sell, and too many of these are constructed in a very imsy manner. The object of the builder is to at- tract attention to his house, and money is spent in ornamentation which should have been used in the more important parts of the structure. No one should place a family in a house until he has made a thorough investi- gation of its sanitary condition.
