The city is wrecked ; the streets are encumbered with masses of fallen bricks . and tangled telegraph and telephone wires, and up to an early hour it was almost impossible to pass from one part of the city to another. The rdt shock was by far the most severe. Most of the people, with their families, passed the night in the streets, which even this morning are crowded with people afraid to re-enter their hou'e_s. More than 60 persons were killed and wounded, chiey colored. Among the whites killed and -fatally iniured are M. J. Lynch. Dr. R Alexander Hammond and Ainsly Robeson. Fires broke out in - different parts ot the city immediately after the earthquake and `some are still burning, but there is no danger of their spreading. A profoundsensation has been caused in `London by the announcement this evening that anonymous proclamations are being circulated in the Punjaub calling upon the natives to rise against the Eng- lish. , They are written in the vernacular of` the country and state, among other things, that the ex-Maharajah Dhuleep Singh has joined the Russians, _and that the Russians are advancing on India. Dhuleep Singh, it will be remembered, a few months ago solemnly renounced the Christian reli%:on` which he adopted cn dust o` his feet against Great Britain, an- nounced that he was about` to return to the land of his fathers and to revert to the worship of the Great Sutgaroo; He was, however, stopped` at Aden and in- formed, that the British Government would not allow him to proceed to India. Country newspapers are not asking too much when `they demand some protection against these irresponsible agents, who, to get a ' first job from a business man, will do it for less than cost, with the expectation of recouping himself at some future time. The work done, is, nine times out of ten, unsatisfactory, being as hurriedly thrown together as possible, and the merchant who was persuaded to give his order, oftentimes nds a stock of printing on his hands that he is ashamed of. Other branches of business are protected against the order agent, and why should not the local newspaper I It would be well if the press of each county V were to take this matter up and have it brought before the Legislature.--_Port Hope Daily Times. `fliers pintelligenoe entitles we rel commend our people to take a deeper in- terest in the political affairs of the coun- try, and support each other more strong- ly than in the past. The late wide disturbances in the earth's crust have set the scientists at work to ex- plain the causes. `These, however, being beyond man s control, can lead to` no practical good. Whether the interior of the earth is full of molten matter and that large portions of the earth's crust are oc- casionally falling into the mass and setting it into waves, which striking the sold crust shakes it, or whether immense volumes of steam from water which suddenly nds it way through some creyices in the rocks which are formed, whose expansion shakes the cities, or whether gases are suddenly evolved by chemical action as some aver, may be pleasing enough to speculate about to those who are in a quiet part of the earth, but to those who are within the area of disturbance, and fearing every moment to be swallowed up by. the open- ing of the earth's crust or buried beneath the ruins of their dwellings, these asserted causes of the quaking have not much con- soL"a`tion in them. _ _|.__'L... -1.
