We notice that he has seized the i-st` opportunity to declare that he will know zzopolitice in_the administration of his department.` If such is his determination he hasjbefore him a herculean task. We suspect he will nd that party politics is a runaway horse a with a hard mouth. very apt in muddy weather to kick over the dashboard and cover the driver with mud.` B.El .lHI'Jl .~l lI9TllUCl`[UN IS OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS. tev. Dr Luing of Dundee has. reprinted ' in pamphlet form (Toronto NewspCo..) the letters he aildi'ess_e to the Mail on this subject. Dr. Luiug feels strongly and writes strongly. He wishes to see the teaching of the Bible made compulsory in our schools. and he wit-ilies also to see our I l schools distinctly Protestant. Dr. Lsing is an expert in debate, and the letters are really ahlecontrihutions to s.` vexed ques- tion. We think, however. that the author has uuderrztted the diioulties in the way of a. compulsory reading of the Scriptures. We believe that as law and regulations now stand, everything that he could fairly de- sire from teachers in the way of moral ing- struction might be obtained, if clergyman were simply to interest themselves in the schools in their own immediate neighbor- hood . it should be remembered that there is no neighborhood in which there is a school in which there is not a. clergyumn. .1... R. ll. Lym1,'tlie now M.P.P., for A1- czoma, nml Mr. Wilkinson, of whom we have all lxonxd," have had A diflbreiice. The dillcrcnco is intorgzsting, affecting as it does the value uf vutcrs in St. Joseph's island. .\Ir. Wilkinson, of whom indeed we have all heard, says he can buy them all up at from $2430 to $5 9. lnezul. Mr. Lyon states that he oan t~which goes to show that Mr. Wilkinson, of whom by the by we ` have all heard, is a better hand at driving a bargain (.han Mr. Lyon. l\*mv thin inn mattnr that nnnnnf. ha a bargain iauuu nu`. uyun. Now this 18 a matter that cannot be passed over lightly. It is a sad and solemn matter and demands sad and solemn in- vestigation. A voter who will sell him- self for 82.50 will probably rank himself in the same quotation with one bag of our, or say three bags of potatoes, while a $5 voter can hardly fail to allow that lie and half a barrel of pork are convertible. This is distressingly low and will tend to force a belief that the voters in St. Joseph's island are an exceedingly undeveloped and primi- tive set of men, not valuable for ordinary purposes. But no ; Mr. Lyon- distinctly says that they are good solid farmers most ofthem and read the newspapers. This is conclusive, especially the closing words. At this rate it would take 120 St. Joseph island farmers rating them all at 85 a. head, to equal one good nigger (taking the ordinary quotation, of ante-war times, at $600 for one able- bodied. young and active nigger, unmar- riod-.-one `with woolly head referred.) This. we repeat. is distressing. 8% are un- willing to believe that the hard times have already made such wreck in St. Joseph's Island. ` ((1.. ..`II ....-_ `IA - l7:I|-2_....... ' A despatch has been received from Mon- treal the burden of which is as follows :- An extraordinary. phase has turned up here in connection with what the Star calls the gas charter scandal. The Citizen's Gas Company has impeached the conduct of Hon. Mr.` Monsseau and his Cabinet in not fullling their duty in granting the charter,- as agreed when the promoters of the-com- .pany consented to let the Government in- troduce a provision in the bill that no proclamation of the Lieutenam:~Govemor granting a charter would be issued until 8100.000 of stock in the company were sub- nm-ihmi_ Nntwithntnndino it was nhnwn tive, Mr. Hugh Graham, have sent a series these corrnptionists."
