Andrew thinks that he runs the panorama and Mary has an idea that he does not. Consequently there is strife. The refuse from the streets is scapital top-dressing. and will in time make a splendid sod. Most of the young trees look thrifty despite the backward state of the season. This ended the interview. Mr. Stewart gave all the information asked for in the most courteous manner. - A_bove are the two sides of the case. It perhaps contains nothing new to manv of our readers, but it conrms much of what has been rumored during the past two or three weeks, and contradicts some, things on both sides that, in the interest of truth should he contradicted. We leave the public to draw their own. conclusions, as it is not for us to act, either as counsel or judge. Two or three remarks however may not be out of place, as they may tend to throw more light upon the subject. , (H An tn Nfr TM wards Imums. mnnv nnnnla SUDJGCE. . . (1) As to Mr. Edwards losses. many people cannot understand where the money has one. Take the sum. of soy $6.000 advan his brother some thirteen years ago. 'I`hisnmonut was totally lost, yet Mr. Edwards has been under the necessity of paying interest ranging from 8 to 12_per cent. upon it ever since. Money at 8 per cent, compound interest, will double itself in ten years. This was for thirteen years, and a portion of it for as high as 12 per cent., therefore it Will not be a. high I:alcnla.tion to say that it increased one and n . half times. That would `make $15,000. 'l`hcn add $9,000 to Mr. E, H. Edwards with inter- est. say $2,000. and $4,000 to M 1'. C-oates with interest, and we have the sum of the liabilities $30,000. Other slnnll losses would swell the amount. But it will be asked, (lid Mr. Edwards earn nothing in all this time? This brings us to another phrase of the question viz. viz. (2) What (lid Mr. Edwards earn annually; It is evident that he really earned nothing I from theborrowcd money, for from his own showing he must have paid the interest of one loan with the principle of "another. But his other sources of` revenue may require some consideration. That he only earned $250 from Insurance we can well believe. That his income from Conveyancing was only $250 was .1 surprise to us as well as to others, but in the absence of any evidence to the contrary we must accept his statement. Rewarding. his income from the Past Oice` we will allow the public to be -the judges. From the Post Master General s Report for the past scal year we find that Mr. Edwards received from the Post Office :-Salary, $1,700 ; Forwarding Allowance, 8160; Allowance for Rent, fuel and Light, 8240 ; Commission on Money Orders. $81 ; and to this must be added the rent for the boxes, say 8250 ; makinga total of $2,431. -There must be deducted from this the salary of his assistants, and other slight ex- penses, but to bring Mr. Edwards income down to $700 those expenses must have amounted to $1,731. _ tR\ Ram.-dina the Postmastershin it is .set- $1,731. (3) Regarding the Postmastershlp tled that Mr. Edwards keeps it. The Depart- ment hold, and rightly, that as ion as A post-' muster keeps his accounts with t e depart- ment square, and his suretiesdo not interfere, they have no concern with his private business relations. Mr. Edwertls` accounts with the Government are correct and his Iureties. hav- ing had the case laid before them, are satisfied. He makes the fth ost master in the County of Simcoe that hes ecmne insolvent and still retains the oliice. . v:...n.. Hm whale map. mtfnr as we are retains the ounce. Finally the whole case, as far as we are able to present it, is now before the people, and our duty, by no` means a pleasant one, is performed. We may say however, that as a friend, we heartily sympathise with Mr. Edwards in the position in which he is placed, though undoubtedly there are those of his creditors who deserve it still more. A nan- cial failure is at less, not only to those more immediately concerned, but to the business comnmity in eneral. and Barrie, has been particularly un ortunate in this respect during the put half-year. We sincerely hope that the end has been reached, that nancial` in- tegrity in Barrie will not receive another shock, at least for some years. We wish we could hope that the end of the case under discussion had been reached. _.._ ........... nnnvna IIIIAN MU tn .=m_-.' _now are` tn \\:Lh Llmdugruu knowledge iI.'{|:1t uluty befqr mg puhlu.-. hzulspokun \|'ul1l1` h rnunnr nut basis knm fuulzm.-1 the-um-ting ! ..,u.'.1 speak: hex-.,-ch-.-uh- Imrtu-:4 thepu (\x'n\\' Liwir inv. . or 1`RlJDI'l`0R3. \\\_*.hu\ u iutcrx in-\'ved several c 1'ed1t.o .L ...)o ol...t Ln! Dohertv came to Barrie from Toronto about eighteen months ago, and was employed work- ing at his trade in Mr. Noil s boot and shoe establishment. He was a very heavy drinker, and prior to his death had been on a spree for " a week. during which time it is said. that he had eaten nothing. During Saturday after- noon he was asleep the greater part cf the time, but about six o clock was seen drinking about the hotels. The next that was seen of him was when his dead body was found at one end of a log. McCarthy's drunken carcase at the other, and an empty whiskey bottle lying between them. There is little doubt that ex- cessive drinking was the cause of death. Doherty s wife and family live in Toronto and are_ very poor. A son arrived in Barrie on Monday toatl-end the funeral which took place on that day. 7 ' Many of our contemporaries have kindly noticed our removal to new quarters and have sympathized with us in the troubles, trials and tribulations incurred in so doing.
