www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, February 21, 2014 | 4 Jenner led women's team into comeback for the gold by Jon Kuiperij Oakville Beaver Staff It all started with Brianne Jenner. Before a linesman's ineptitude nearly led to a game-clinching empty-netter by the Americans, before Canada tied the game with 55 seconds remaining in regulation, before some dubious penalty calls in overtime and before Marie-Philip Poulin's power-play winner 8:10 into OT, Jenner kick-started Canada's comeback in Thursday's Olympic women's hockey gold-medal game in Sochi. The 22-year-old Oakville native, the second-youngest member of the Canadian squad, scored her first-ever Olympic marker with 3:26 to go in the third period, cutting the Americans' lead to 2-1. Jenner cut across the slot and released a shot that deflected off a U.S. defender and into the net, giving Canada some much-needed life. "I just wanted to kind of change the shot angle and fire it on net. That's what our scouting was saying. It worked out, so I was happy to contribute," the Appleby College grad said following Canada's 3-2 win. "It's an amazing feeling. And it's an amazing feeling to win the way we did. It just shows our character. We believed the whole time. (Trailing 1-0) going into the third, our room was calm and we focused. I'm just so proud right now." The comeback was almost not to be. With Canada's goaltender pulled for an extra attacker and the U.S. leading 2-1, a linesman got in the way of Canadian defenceman Catherine Ward at the American blue line. The U.S. fired the puck the length of the ice towards the vacated Canadian goal, squarely hitting the left post. Poulin tied the game seconds later, then clinched Canada's fourth consecutive women's hockey gold in overtime. "Maybe the hockey gods were with us. I thought we played a good game all game. It's just that theirs were going in," said Jenner, who called the victory the thrill of her life. "We just had to keep with our game plan. We weren't going to change our game plan, and it paid off. "It's (Hayley Wickenheiser's) fourth (gold) medal and she says it feels like her first. And to get my first, it feels amazing too." Even before she scored, Jenner was one of the more noticeable Canadian forwards in the third period. The Appleby College grad saw 15:19 of ice time in the final and was a plus-1. Last year at Cornell University, Jenner received her third career nomination as a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award presented annually to the top women's college ice hockey player in the U.S. She was also named the Eastern Collegiate Oakville's Brianne Jenner, centre, celebrates with teammates after scoring the first goal that led to a dramatic turnaround and a Athletic Conference and Ivy League player of the gold medal after a 3-2 win in overtime during the Women's Ice Hockey Gold Medal Game between Canada and the U.S. at the year in 2013, and was the Ivy League rookie of the Bolshoy Ice Dome at the Sochi Winter Olympics Thursday.| photo by Andrej Isakovic/AFP/Getty Images e see Jenner on p.15 waste electronics unplugged DENNIS' of OAKVILLE AUTO SERVICE s r r DENNIS CIACCIA Owner/Operator NATIONWIDE LIFETIME GUARANTEES · SERVING THE OAKVILLE COMMUNITY SINCE 1990 NOTAX (NO HST) · Change oil, filter & lube · Up to 5ltrs.,10W30, 5W20, 5W30-Synthetic Oil Extra · Load test battery & service terminals if required · Check cooling system, test coolant strength BRAKES SPECIAL SAFETY CHECKS ON PARTS & LABOUR $ Most Cars.
