Canada Post to address mobility issues continued from p.5 "We've been implementing community mailboxes for 30 years and during that time, we've certainly dealt with many seniors and lots of mobility issues along the way. We certainly have established some alternative approaches aimed at making the box as accessible as it can be," said Traversy. "We've provided extra keys to care givers or neighbours, someone they trust who can go and get their mail. We've worked with municipalities to do cuts to the curbs or other things to make traveling to the box more accessible. We've adjusted which box certain individuals will get if height is an issue for them." Canada Post, she said, is also reaching out to groups representing seniors and disabled Canadians to brainstorm some ideas on how those with mobility issues can access the community mailboxes. Traversy said the community mailboxes would also offer better security for the delivery of parcels, which are on the rise. "Community mailboxes are such an effective and convenient way to get parcels," she said. "We think a locked community mailbox offers a lot more security for parcels and really any kind of mail than an unlocked box at the front door." Canada Post will deliver to the door parcels too large to fit in the community mailbox's compartments and parcels or registered items that require a signature." Canada Post currently delivers mail to approximately 72,000 Oakville addresses. Only 26,400 are still on door-todoor delivery, with the rest already making use of community mailboxes or some other form of centralized delivery (delivery to apartment lobbies). Residents with concerns about the switch can call the Canada Post customer service line at 1-866-6076301. Affected residents will receive an information package from Canada Post in the next week or so telling them how they can express their priorities and preferences about their new delivery method.
