The 23-year-old Oakville native, who became international news when he was ejected from his National Hockey League debut following a game-opening line brawl between the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames Jan. 18, suited up for the Canucks against the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday at the Air Canada Centre. And father Jim, mother Sheila and brother Brett were there to see it -- as they were for Kellan's first game in Vancouver -- along with sister Kerra, grandmother Shirley Bowie and around 25 other family members and friends. "It was awesome," said Kellan, who played 13 shifts and saw 6:41 of ice time in the Canucks' 3-1 loss. "Growing up and watching the Leafs every Saturday... getting a chance to play against them on Hockey Night In Canada and having my family and friends in the stands is something I won't forget. It's something you dream about, so when it does actually come true, it's really exciting." Jim had actually seen Kellan in live NHL action five nights earlier, driving down to Detroit to watch the Canucks drop a 2-0 decision to the Red Wings. But it was the first opportunity for Sheila and Brett to see Kellan play in person since his abbreviated debut. There was concern Kellan might not play in Toronto, since he was a healthy scratch for the Canucks' Thursday game in Montreal, but Vancouver coach John Tortorella told the T.A. Blakelock high school grad Friday that he'd be in the lineup against the Leafs. "We've watched him whenever he's played on TV , through the sports package we've got," said Jim. "But it's different when you're there. It is a little more anxiousness and ner- vousness, I suppose. It was fun. It was exciting." It was also enough for the Lains, a household with Leafs allegiances, to root against their hometown team -- for one night, at least. "I've been a Leafs fan since I was a kid. Kellan, not so much. His allegiances revolved around his favourite players... but he was a Leafs fan as well. Sheila is more of a Leafs fan than any other team, or at least she was until six months ago," Jim said. "(Cheering against your favourite team) is not as hard as you might think. When your kid is out there, it's pretty easy to root for whatever team he's on. Any other night I'm there, for the few times I get to go to the ACC, I'm a Leafs fan -- as long as it doesn't have any influence on the Canucks." For now, the Lains' rooting interest switches back to the AHL's Utica Comets. With the NHL shutting down for two weeks because of the Olympics, Kellan has been sent back see Comets on p.25 Finding your next used car is as easy as pie. The best way to find your next used car.
