This, he goes on to say, is only"a sample of the gloomy news which is heing disseminated in Orillia these days. The editor continues: From such statements coupled with a re- cent Glohe editorial which I promptly re- futed it would seem that some low down characters are deliberately trying to dis- courage motoring into Muskoka and be- yond. A member of the Gazette staff drove from Orillia to Bracebridge during the past week in 70 minutes and said the road is not had at all. it is paved to Severn Bridge and oiled to within a few miles of (3u`avenhurst. The rest of the way is now very dusty but there is nothing else what- ever to inconvenience motorists. l`he Orillia knockers, it would appear, are getting under the skin of the Bracebridge edi- tor. Barrie is a disinterested onlooker in the controversy. We do not knock here, but we can say that the motoring from Toronto or from any point south, east or west to Barrie. is excellent. From Barrie to Orillia-we1l, it is not so go,itl--ratliei' bumpy, in fact. North of Orillia we cannot say, but the case is appar- ently in good hands when G.H.O.T. takes up his trusty pen. L,;'.lI,C }.'UlLlLo I ` Barrie is in the identical position of Simcoe and developments in the latter town will be watched with interest. Our Council, too, was some time ago advised that it-had granted lic- ,enses to operate curb gas pumps illegally. The slogan at the council board when the last per-` mit was passed favorably upon was this is positively the finish-no more. It was sug- gested after hours of discussion, at several meetings. that licenses be not renewed and that operators be given one year in which to remove the objectionable pumps. A concessionaire at the circus which recently visited here told The Examiner his commission on the sale of toy balloons, elephants, mon- keys, etc.. the day previous in a northern town was $68.50 and in Barrie $6.80. This statement may be accepted by Barrieites as a compliment to their good judgment.
