Mrs. Loftus with her husban-d settled here many years ago, long before the present Phelpston was in existence -and before the railroad was through, settling on 8rd conces- sion about a mile south of the vil- lage. `They fought their way through the hardships of those pioneer days and succeeded in raising a large family of boys and girls. Mrs. Lof- tus of late years had been residing with her son. Joseph. Not very long ago she had failed somewhat in health and so, at her advanced age, her death -was not-a surprise to her friends and relatives. The funeral ;was held. on the following Satur- day to the RJC. cemetery where a large number of relatives and friends were present to show their last respects. Innisfil, on July 4, 1858, the son of Thomas Webb and Nancy Bowman, among the township's earliest pioneers, his grandfathers on both sides being a- mong the fi-rst -settlers to come from England. Deceased spent his boy- hood days on the homestead until as a young man he married Mary Montgomery, also a member of a well known pioneer Innisfil family, originally coming from Scotland, he took up 100_ acres just north of Stroud. In fact. the ground on which the church, in which his fun- eral service was held, once formed part of his farm. The late Mr. Webb, with his wife, who survives hi-m, carried on farming until 1916. when they -retired to `Stroud. The opera- tion of the farm was left to his son, Russell. Deceased was also a most successful thresher and was known in practically every home in Innis- fil and neighboring townships .1-Ie carried on his threshing business for 25 or -80 years. In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Webb moved, to Barrie, pur- chasing the residence at which he died. He was formerly a `Methodist, now United `Church, of which he was a member and Conservative in = politics.
