The long awaited computer classes are starting in the New Year, starting on Tuesday, January 8 with an introduction to computers. It is geared to beginners and participants will be taught how to set up a computer, connect to the internet, connect monitors, keyboards, your mouse, etc. The instructors are Matthew and Jessie Caldwell. There is a sign up sheet for anyone interested. Each week a different subject will be covered. Yo u c a n p i c k w h i c h course interests you. You can bring your own laptop or share one of the Centre's laptops. Looking for the perfect gift for a sports fan? Sean Mitton wrote a book The Goal that United Canada. We will have the paperback book for sale at the Bazaar. For each copy sold, we will receive a portion of the proceeds. So, not only a great gift, but the Centre will gain also. It is a collection of 72 stories of where people were and how it affected them, after Paul Henderson scored the memorable goal in 71 that won the game and united Canada. On Thursday afternoon while playing Bid Euchre Roberta Thompson had two mooners Frances Hogenbirk and Elma Braida each had one. Just a note for anyone considering hiking on Friday afternoons, they now leave the Seniors Centre at 1 p.m., and car pool to the various trails in the area. This is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people and keep fit. We had a lovely surprise on Friday afternoon when members of St. Joseph's school visited with their teacher Francine Calderwood. They presented a plant to every member present. The manager of Sobeys Brian Randall, Rockwood Family Casual Dining and Tara Murphy, manager of TD, helped make this possible with generous donations. The plants were used as part of their Remembrance Day Service at the school. A wonderful surprise. Thank you students. On a sad note, Clayton Fryer passed away on November 6. Clayton moved to Acton from B.C. several years ago when he married Marie Zions and he and Marie came to many social dinners when he was well. He was also a volunteer with our security committee. The Centre would like to extend our condolences to Marie and the family. The 50/50 was won this Friday by a very deserving lady. Marion Storey has been a dedicated member of the Centre for many years and still volunteers at the front desk on alternate Friday afternoons. She helps produce the wonderful baskets we sell draw tickets on at our Bazaar. She won $304. By Julie Conroy I must start of with an apology. The Pregnant Pumpkin lady at our Hallowe'en dance was Donna Boyko not Anne Bulstrode. My apologies to both ladies. Eighteen members and their guests attended the Birthday Tea on Tuesday. November 6. They were celebrating birthdays that occurred in either October or November. Tickets are on sale for the Christmas dinner at Blue Springs. The cost for members and guests is the same for this party and not only will you enjoy a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and a glass of complimentary wine but the four young men from Dreamboats will entertain you. I am sure many of you remember when they played at the Centre last time. The new portal is being demonstrated to participants from local ESL classes (English as a second language) as part of their visit to the Halton Regional Administrative Centre for the annual Halton Information Services Fair. The goal of the Portal is to provide Newcomers with information to assist them as they transition to their new life in Halton. Information is provided on everything from community supports such as local services for Newcomers, information about government services, education and training, employment and the local labour market, healthcare, and community services. It can be overwhelming to know what you need to do when you arrive in Canada. The Halton Newcomer Portal is designed to make it easier for Newcomers to identify what they need to do and who they need to connect with. The portal will be officially launched Wednesday, November 21, with greetings from Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, and a demonstration of Halton Newcomer Portal.
