Halton police have released a description of the suspect believed involved in a Tuesday evening sexual assault near Sheridan College. Soon after the attack, police took a man into custody, but later released him without laying charges. Police said they are confident the man initially questioned is not responsible for the assault. They have since appealed to the public to help find the culprit. A man sexually assaulted a woman at 6 p.m. as she walked along a wooded path near the college's Trafalgar Road campus. During the assault, the victim bit her attacker and there is a strong possibility the suspect suffered an injury consistent with a bite mark to one of his hands. Police appealed for those witnesses to come forward and the males were later identified and co-operated with investigators. The person believed to be involved in this assault may also be responsible for similar attacks, which occurred last August and October in the same location. The sought-after man is described as 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-6 with a slim or medium build. He wore a dark-coloured jacket that had a hood lined with light-coloured material. He had a dark covering over his face. She was then sexually assaulted. Witnesses, who came upon the scene, chased the suspect, but were unable to catch him. An individual was picked up by police a short time later, interviewed and released with no charges laid. Atkinson said the ATV can travel about 30 km/h and those driving it are mindful of pedestrians on the trails. She also said the vehicle is equipped with lights, which are used when it patrols in the evening. Not everyone, though, is happy about the new security feature. One McCraney Street resident, who declined to be named, argued the ATV ruins the natural atmosphere of the wooded area and thinks foot and bike patrols would cause less damage. He also said the use of the ATV seems excessive noting on Tuesday, the vehicle drove by a section of trail close to his home four times in 10 minutes. Atkinson said Sheridan College has permission from the Town of Oakville to use the ATV on the trails. She noted the college also checked to ensure the vehicle was in keeping with the Town's noise bylaw. On Tuesday, she said, the ATV was dispatched to deal with some youths who were throwing snowballs at a daycare on college property. This may account for the increased presence of the ATV on the trails that day, she explained. Atkinson also said the college has been in touch with the resident who complained. "We have responded to all his inquiries and complaints and concerns, but this seems to be one of those situations where we are doing the best we can to safeguard our students and our community and, unfortunately, he takes exception to this particular method of doing so," she said. In addition to the ATV , Atkinson said Sheridan does have regular foot patrols through these trail areas and announcements are made to alert students whenever an incident like a sexual assault takes place in the area. The college, she said, does have a 24/7 program whereby students can arrange for security to escort them to their vehicle or across campus. "There are a lot of options for students," said Atkinson. "They don't need to set off alone through the woods at night. They can request a security escort." Renovation Sale entire stock off Everything must go!
