You should listen in on this. It's one of the funniest things you ever heavd. You'll never be satisfied until you add this record to your collelion. Have you heard Wilheim telephoning Vienna on Victor Record No. 130105? It may be a little early to urge attention to the ordinary Christ- mas shopping, but it is not too soon to ask our readers to direct their attention towards prepar- begin to understand what calm- ness and endurance mean; and if Tasks in hours of insight willed can be through hours of gloom fulfilled, then we are worthy of the test and shall sur- vive it. That is the position in which the Allies stand` today, united in a common task of dan- ger and dilliculty, and_not to be turned either on the right or on the left by those specious sug- gestions of peace thrdligh which Germany seeks to sap the loyal- ty unconquerable by her power. For a practical expression of patriotism it would be hard to find a better illustration than that which the farmers of Man- itoba have given. Almost every member of the Manitoba Grain Growers` Association has prom- ised to `donate one acre of his crop to patriotic purposes, the wheat produced on it to be taken to a central market and sold. LIMITED It is gratifying to know that. the efforts of Mr. Boys and oth- ers to secure a wint_er cam]; for Barrie have been successful and that in the neighborhood of six hundred soldiers will be dwellers among us for several months. ;The Council has taken steps to provide accommodation for the men and there is every reason to believe that the arrangements will be carried out in a manner that will give satisfaction to the visitors and do credit to the. town. From the organization of the first quota of recruits here, the citizens have shown a very active and kindly interest in the snldim-.s--an interest that will undoubtedly be extended to the officers and men of the 76th Regt. during their sojourn amongst us. 4 In the years of prosperity and peace that have blessed our Em- pire, especially in the, wonder- ful development of our fair, young land, there may have been a tendency to be satisfied with- out looking beyond; to be so en- grossed with our pleasures and possessions, as\to forget to look upwards in thankfulness to Him who dwells above; to take the gifts from Him who giveth us richly all things to enjoy and forget the Giver, even to think, in some measure, like the `proud king of old, Is not this a great Canada which I have built!" And God has had to remind us, Thoughts on Thanksgiving The ruling spirit of the aut- umn-tide ought to be thanks- giving. It shines on the wide stretches of golden grain, it breathes in the rich pleni-tude of ripening fruits, it_ rings in the happy voices of children hastening to school, it animates the reunited family circle as they rehearse the varied exper- iences by mountain, lake or sea, it inspires anew the life of the Church as it girds itself again for the` work of another year. 011 January 1, 1916, all adver.. tisements of liquor will be elim- inated from all bill-boards of Canada and the United States. This decision has been reached by the board of directors of the Poster Advertising Association, which controls the bill-boards of four thousand towns and cit- ies. Liquor advertising is dis- appearing from the newspapers also, and before long the only advertisements of alcoholic bev- lerages will be seen in the coun_ .tenances of those who use them to excess. ` But through these strains of rejoicing, there sound deep chords of sorrow,. and there ri- ses up continually _before us the dark background of the nations at war. Hearts that are burd- ened with - anxiety or bleeding with loss. cry out "How long! How long!" And the still, small Voice" says, Be still and know that I am God." is not only unwelcome but most; discouraging. To such a one? criticism which points a better; way is gladly received. Let us give one another credit for try... ing to do what is best, then our criticism will lose its sting, and become helpful and constructive by pointing toward what should be'as well as away from what should not be. Those who take particular dc- light in nding fault and criti- cising the work of others with- out any effort to assist in re- medying_ the defects they profess to see might very well take to heart the advice of the Pioneer when it says :'-The kind of cri- ticism that benets is as wel-; come as it is scarce. It is one of! the easiest things in the world} to point out mistakes. It is often one of the hardest to show how a thing could be done better. To persons who are honestly trying to do their best, criticism that exhausts itself in fault-findingI ..-1 _,,,I ing Christmas gifts for the sol-! dier lads in the trenches. ` Just why wards of the Child- ren's Aid Society should be sent to `Provincial institutions and charged to the Town of Barrie is not apparent to the ordinary ratepayer. The Barrie Shelter is open to the wards of the Chil-. dren s Aid Society from all parts of the County and Barrie is most liberally doing its_part/ in furnishing a home for these un- fortunate children. A ward of the Society has been sent to the Consumptive Hospital at Wes- ton and although she was not previously a resident of Barrie and the olcials of the Town Council know nothing of her commitment, payment for her treatment has been demanded of the Town. The Government gives power to Provincial institutions to collect a certain percentage of the cost of treatment from the municipality, but it is wis- (ion) on the part of the Council to have a definite understanding as to'wl1at liability they incur in having the County Shelter locat- ed here. Surely the other muni_ cipalities of the County are will- ing to bear their fair share of the cost of maintaining their homeless children, If not, such regulations should be adopted in reference to the admission of children from out ofltown to the care of the Barrie Shelter that would obviate any such diiliculty as has arisen in this case. Till IIBRII IXAIIIII AID SATURDAY IORIIIO London Daily Telegraph-A trial such as that which Europe is going` through is a severe test of all the qualities which make a nation-its persistence, its re- cuperative power, its laborious industry, its courage, and its self-denial. Thanksgiving, too, wells up within us when we think of the eager readiness with which the young men of our land have re- sponded to the call of the Moth- erland for help. The brightest and best of the youth of our country, with 1ife s fairest pro- lmises opening out before them, have gone forth bravely for the sake of country, honor and lib- erty, and their heroism and un- ltlinching courage has made all -the. world wonder. Self-sac1-ice is one of the highest attainments of the Christian character, and how faithfully and persistently this has been carried out during the past year by the heroic ad- Vance, grim resistance, and day after day's stern endurance in the trenches, history alone will reveal, but the half will never be told.-Ex. Thou shalt have no other gods before me." But God meets His repentant people, even as of old, and will hear. in heaven their prayer and supplication and maintain their cause." So today as we think of. the Empire, brought back to meet with God in prayer, our hearts are stir- red with deepest thankfulness. ' I`I1LA_,,I ,7 Read the Adlet conimn.
