"He really bought into the idea that the student athlete was somebody who was in leadership training. He used to say that all the time," said Sheridan College director of athletics and recreation Jim Flack. "Some people talk a good game, this guy walked it. He absolutely believed in the (notion of the) student athlete. He didn't want people to sign up, play and then drop out. He believed in (the role of) sports in the academic stream." Blundy, a member of Sheridan's first graduating class who was an athlete, trainer, facility manager and coach during his nearly 40 years with the school, succumbed to his battle with cancer Sunday. "We all knew this day was imminent, but when a flame of energy like Steve's is extinguished, the finality still comes as a shock. There is no one that played more roles in the development and philosophy of our department," Flack said. Blundy was Sheridan's male athlete of the year in 1968-69, the Bruins' inaugural season in intercollegiate men's hockey. Blundy was the team's MVP and was named an OCAA all-star that season. He went on to play three more seasons for the Bruins hockey squad, captaining the team in one of those years and finishing with 97 points in 47 career games. Following his graduation, Blundy served as Sheridan's facility manager, was the trainer of the football team, coached women's hockey from 1976-81 and then took the reins of the men's hockey program from 1979-84 and 198592. Blundy, who guided the Bruins to an OCAA men's hockey title in 1982-83 and was named the league's coach of the year in the 1986-87 and 1987-88 campaigns, compiled an overall record of 12884-6 during his tenure behind the bench. After the school retired its men's hockey program in 1992, Blundy served as Sheridan's facility coordinator until retiring in 2007. He was inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2011 and became the first legacy inductee into the Sheridan Bruins Hall of Fame during Homecoming 2012.
