Actually, it was much quicker than that. Lain was ejected just two seconds into his first game with the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night, following a gameopening line brawl with the Calgary Flames, to set a record for fastest fight to start an NHL career. Tuesday in Edmonton, the Oakville Blades product showed he can do more than fight. Lain scored his first career NHL goal at the 5:14 mark of the first period, bouncing a rebound off Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens and into the net. It was just the 6-foot-6, 220-pound centre's third shift of his NHL career -- and the second that wasn't immediately ended by a scrap. Lain went on to record five minutes and 14 seconds of ice time in the Canucks' 2-1 win over the Oilers. "You always dream of playing in the NHL, but you also dream of scoring that first goal," Lain told reporters after Tuesday's game. "When you get it, it's a pretty special moment. I just drove the net and the puck just popped out to me." Lain's teammates were happy to see the 24-year-old T.A. Blakelock grad achieve the milestone three days after his brief debut, which parents Jim and Sheila and brother Brett had flown out to the west coast to see. "In three shifts, he fought a heavyweight and scored a goal," defenceman Kevin Bieksa, a product of the Burlington Cougars, told the Province. "You can't have a better start than that." "I don't know if you can picture more memorable first two games in the NHL than that," goaltender Roberto Luongo told the Province. "Everyone is so thrilled for Kellan," added acting head coach Mike Sullivan, also speaking to the Provsee Vancouver on p.25 Driven to exceed your expectations.
