www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, January 17, 2014 | 10 HERITAGE Lifestyle Home Furnishings Since 1977 Toys for Tots topped 2012 effort The past holiday season's Toys for Tots drive, organized by Halton police, topped the previous year's collection total. The 2013 campaign collected more than $334,000 worth of toys, gift cards, cash and food -- exceeding the previous year's drive by $49,000 in goods. Donations benefitted close to 4,000 families throughout Halton over the holiday season -- 200 more needy families than in 2012. "By working together, as one team, the community, our partners and our own members have clearly shared in the spirit of giving to those less fortunate," Halton Regional Police Service Chief Stephen Tanner said in a press release. Many individuals and organizations once again gave to the cause. The Minor Oaks Hockey Association's Fill the Net Campaign, organized by team manager Polli Taylor, helped raise more than $59,000 in toys, gift cards, cash and Canadian Tire money. The Burlington Lions Optimist Minor Hockey Association toy drive, led again by Shari Carruthers, raised more than $36,666 in toys, gift cards, cash and Canadian Tire money. Flower Pot Press donated $83,000 worth of children's books. Other community partners who made significant contributions included Canadian Tire, St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, TD/ Canada Trust, Halton Region, Mandarin Restaurant, Halton Honda, G.E. Water, Halton Hurricanes, Budds', East Side's Auto group and the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation. Many other schools, businesses, residents, communities and volunteers also contributed to the 2013 campaign, including civilian and uniformed members of Halton police who gave their own time and money. Members helped collect in excess of $50,000 in cash and toys at Canadian Tire stores and Halton police stations. Halton police held a Gift Card Challenge through individual platoon fundraisers and units, raising more than $3,000 for needy families.
