The Halton Children's Aid Society (CAS), which has offices in Burlington and Milton, is marking Adoption Awareness Month by encouraging residents throughout Halton to learn about the role of adoption and lifelong connections in making a difference in the lives of children and youth. According to a press release issued by the CAS, some 7,500 children and youths under the care of CAS's across Ontario may be eligible for adoption. Last year, 830 children and youths were connected to their families through adoption; another 2,200 are establishing permanency through legal custody, in which the child is placed with an alternate caregiver; kinship care, in which the child is placed with a family member after a period of formal training has been completed and customary care, an option similar to kinship care available to children with Native status. Of the 12 adoptions finalized by Halton CAS last year, 75 per cent were aged 12 and under, and the remaining 35 per cent were aged 13 or older. Currently, the agency is working on permanency plans for 18 children aged 10 or older. Those interested in adoption are asked to consider that older children and youth need families to care for them and help them make a successful transition to adulthood. Adoptive parents can come from all walks of life: individuals or couples, people unable to have children of their own or who already have kids, or adults whose first choice for building a family is through adoption.
