SPORTOPICS, School Chi WRAT'S THE MATTER DEPT. It was right after Christmas ladt year when the wolvés began ta hawl for "Bep" Guidolin'a scalp. Oshawa neral who had been first or second until the year end, suddehdy just couldn't get untracked. [t was the sarne Guldéliza who was the guiding genius behlnd- the Generals playoff drive ',tcarried them ta the Memorial Cup finals. New "Beep (s acclaimed as the best coach ln the business. Even general fanager Wren Blair, who wasn't exactly buddy-buddy with "Bep", had ta agree that his coach had done an excellent job. What few fans know was that Blair wamn't permitted ta enter the dressing rooni, without Guidolin's perrnlsuloz and once the players knew their coach was lni control, as "Bep" would proudly say, "They'd skate through a brick wall for me." The monetary rewards weren't very large, so Guidolin let the scene ta become a beer salesman up ln lhis hometown of Timmins. He would have stayed, because Blair had ea.rnd the right ta higher success, as general-manager of one of the. N.H.L.'s expansion teams and wouldn't be around. Nowever, ~ it was feit that "Bep" for some reason or other wasn't capable of handling the G.M. duties, and of course this happened te be where the maney was. Oshawa-born Ted O'Connor was appolnted to the dual raie instead. O'Connor had a great back-ground, having played with the Generals and Whitby Dunlops when they won the World Championship. He also had pro experlence ........................... and had just caached the Oshawa Jr. "B's" to a successiul ' season. Ted didnt have ta content with the tempestuous Wr. Blair, but he was alsa minus the great (at 18) Bobby Orr, sure-ire N.H.L. prospects Danny O'Shea and Wayne Cash- '.~ man, alang with another going concern - Billy Heindi. Every Jr. "A" teani Jases players every year - but these guys just happened ta be about the best on the club. However, Oshawa started off on the rlght foot blanklng the current league-leading Kitchener Rangers in their home games had wan three others and tied one. In their next haif dozen encounters, the Generals beat Peterborough, and turne in a 5-2 win right in Niagara Falls. They tled another and lo, three hard-fought games 2-1 to Toronto Maribarcs, 4.2 i n"St. Catharines and a 4-3 decision at the Hamilton Forumn. Ail three lasses away from home could have gone elther way, but stili the Generals challenged for the lead. Flyers got even by handing Oshawa their first home !ce defeat, but the Generals rebounded by skating to a 5-1 victory over Peterborough rîght in the ldftlock centre. Since that game, there hasn't been much to cheer about. They lost week-end encaunters ta Hamilton and Kitchener, and mnade it four straight the followlng week-end when they *couldnt even score a goal, bowlng 4-0 at homne te Manlies and 6-0 the following night in St. Catharines. The next Saturday - Sunday sciiedul. was much better, Generals defeating Montreal 5-1 and then tylng the Jr. Habs . ..... 2-2. Generals have now lost four of their last five, the lone victary aver Peterborough 8-4, ln whlch O'Connor and Roger>: Bedard each landed ane punch to wind Up with six game >ý suspensions. Now the dlock has run full cycle and the wolves are after O'Connor. They want Guldalin back, some thlnk that Jim Cherry could do the job and still others are In favor of promating Jr. "1B" coach Bob Dionne. "Okey" has ta be the best of our knowledge a three year contract - so even If he were lncllned, "Bep" wouldn't return as salely coach for another pittance. Bob DNonne had Te publie schools in the Generals playing their best hockey of the se:Àson ln his preparing for Christmas î debut fifling ln for O'Connor - but one game cýoesn't make Plctures were taken at1 an entire season. Certainly Cherry Is daing a remarkable where many decorations job with Whitby Jr. "B" 's, but the rap agalnst Jini before youngsters who have ais was his inability to teach the players anythlng. He was great ations anid other beautiful at instiling desire but that was it.
