This election there are 1109 more eligible voters in Durham than in 1963, for a total of 22,972. Al municipalities showed increases exoept Manvers Township. Bowmanville jumped 308 and Darling- ton 255. t1 t t t t CROOKS - At least two citizens of Bowmanville received phone calis this week from crooks who were obviously trying to defraud them of money. In both cases they failed but others are warned to be alert. The caller dlaims he is phoning f rom a local bank, checking on money that has been handed out by the teller when they cashed their old age pension cheque. They suggest some of it may be counterfeit and could they see it. In other cases, the elderly people have let them in and handed over their money for inspection. While the chap is supposed to be checking the money, they receive another phone cali supposed to be f rom the bank. The money and the f irst man have disappeared when the phone cail has been com- pleted. t t t I.t FIRE - About 10 o'clock Tuesday night, Bowman- ville firemnen had their second call of the nîght from Solina where a shed at the rear of Lorne Kellett's store wvas ablaze. When they arrived, the small building was a total loss. Fortunately, the wind was blowing in the right direction or several pioperties cou] d have been d estroyed. t. DECISION- Tonight, Zion and Solina Senior football squads wilI meet at Solina field to have another try to breaking their deadlock for the championship. On Saturday, they played to a no- goal tie in Zion. At the Solina fire last night someone jokîngly suggested the blaze could have heen started by a Zion supporter to keep the Solina team fromn getting a good night's sleep. RETIRING - Word was received this week. that Public Utilities Commissioner Lawrence C. Mason, Q.C., will not be standing for election this year. It is also understood that several new people wvill be nominated for Town Council. i. t t t t BOOM - C. Ernie Rehder reported an unusual occurrence at his Bowmanville Foundry plant this morning. His desk is covered with a large sheet of plate glass, or it was, until today when the glass virtually exploded into a million frag- ments. What caused the blow up, nobody appears to know. t t t f t CURLING - Applications were mailed this week to former and prospective curlers, and already several have been returned, to indicate that this season could be the biggest one to date. It is expected the freezing machine will be completely overhauled by Oct. lSth. ay (inset) watches fire nt its peak.
