The annual Toys for Tots campaign is a joint venture of Halton Regional Police, Canadian Tire, Salvation Army, Mandarin restaurant, Halton Honda and the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation. It provides gifts to families in need across Halton. On hand at the kickoff at Canadian Tire's Appleby Line, Burlington store Friday were some Minor Oaks Hockey Association of Oakville (MOHA) and the Burlington Lions Optimist Minor Hockey Association (BLOMHA) players. Combined, the groups collected more than $85,000 worth of toys, gift cards and cash in the 2012 campaign. Oakville is eyeing a 2.93 per cent increase to its portion of the overall tax bill. However, at Monday morning's meeting of the 2014 budget committee, Oakville's Deputy Treasurer Nancy Sully said that will be reduced to 1.3 per cent when combined with Halton Region's proposed tax increase of 0.4 per cent and no boost in education rates Tom Adams next year. If approved, Oakville property taxpayers will pay an extra $11.85 per $100,000 of assessment in 2014 -- an extra $47.40 for a $400,000 home.
