www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, November 15, 2013 | 4 Planning designs earn Livable Oakville Awards from the people The people have spoken: the North Oakville East water pumping station project team is the Citizens' Choice winner in this year's Livable by Design Awards. The structure, on Dundas Street, is the first recipient of the honour and one of eight recognized Nov. 8 at the Queen Elizabeth Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) by the Town of Oakville, in celebration of World Town Planning Day. In total, 2,000 residents cast votes for the award. The competition, which recognizes outstanding urban design, heritage preservation and sustainable buildings, received 28 submissions. Top honours for the Award of Excellence, were shared between the Historic BMO (Anthropologie) building at 159 Lakeshore Rd. E. and The Shores, located at 11 Bronte Rd. According to the selection committee, both projects stood out for different reasons: Historic BMO (Anthropologie) represents exemplary execution of heritage revitalization within downtown Oakville while The Shores, designed by Page+Steele/IBI Group Architects offers an exceptional vision of new mixed-use development within Bronte Village. The QEPCCC was recognized with the Award of Distinction for its community-driven adaptive reuse, while the design team for the Uptown Oakville Transit Facility earned the Award of Distinction for crafting a striking architectural solution for a utilitarian facility. The selection committee also presented Awards of Merit to three projects: the LIUNA Centre for its contribution in sustainability by achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification; the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts for creating a safe, convenient and accessible outdoor place associated with a civic facility; and Westwood Park for contributing to place-making in Kerr Village. "We are proud of all the 28 submissions and thank the project teams for creating buildings and spaces that are vibrant, sustainable and make Oakville even more livable," said Mayor Rob Burton. "On behalf of council, congratulations to this year's award recipients. Thank you for sharing your dedication to design excellence."
