www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 14, 2013 | 14 Students shouldn't be triplegraded continued from p.8 displace English track programs that you are mandated to provide. "These dual-track schools need caps for better balance in education so the English track schools can mimic the same wonderful experience of learning the French Immersion classes are receiving in the same building. "By re-directing Grade 1 English students when enrolment is low is giving Halton the green light to grow more French Immersion schools and doesn't look at reducing French Immersion boundaries as a solution," she said. McFarland was also against triple grading English students as an option before re-direction. "We were told two years ago triple grade classes don't exist in this board," she said. "We do not live in a mountainous rural region where triple grade classes are the norm. Across the hall sits two or three equally balanced, fully diverse and fully-resourced French Immersion classes. This does not follow your own policy of an equitable and inclusive board that serves the needs of all students." Heritage Glen used to be a singletrack English school, but it has been switched to a dual-track format with previously-bused French Immersion students returning to their school, a move that parent Leslie Welch welcomed. "Children, who lived and play in the same neighbourhood should attend their local school together regardless of the program they are involved in," Welch said. "Heritage Glen is a model Halton should be replicating." Most parents agreed with starting Core French in Grade 1, but urged the Board to roll it out Region-wide instead of as a pilot project in just 16 schools. Trustees are expected to vote on the recommendations at their next board meeting on Nov. 20. The recommendations were compiled based on input from teachers, board representatives and parents and included the results of a questionnaire that was filled out by nearly 4,000 parents in June.
