www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 7, 2013 | 22 Housing forum aims to help seniors know the options by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver Halton has a number of housing options available for seniors, but many in the community aren't aware of what they are. To help them find suitable choices, Halton Region's Elder Services Advisory Committee (ESAC) and the local Seniors Working-Action Group (SWAG) are presenting a forum on rightsizing and downsizing on Nov. 12 from 1-3 p.m. at the Sir John Colborne Seniors Centre, located at 1565 Old Lakeshore Rd. W. SWAG past-chair Ruth Sheridan said seniors are at a stage in life where they're either trying to "de-clutter or prepare for a future move." "A lot of people in the seniors community have said that they're in this position now. How do they go about downsizing? How do they go about knowing the options for housing? They just don't know and we're hoping that we will reach people to share ideas to give them answers," she said. Sheridan hopes the forum will inform seniors of their options before a "crisis situa- tion" develops. "More long-term thinking is better. We try to intercept a problem before it happens. Even though that may not be the future we need, it's really good to know the options that are available," she said. "It's better to not wait for a crisis." Carole Ward, a member of the Elder Services Advisory Committee (ESAC), will be reviewing Halton's housing options for seniors at the event. "There are a lot of options out there that people don't know. They often think they're going to stay in their home until they go into a long-term care home. There are so many other options along the way that would be better for them," said Ward. "If you need care, there's an option for that. If you're low-income, there's an option for that. It depends on what your needs are, but you need to know." As a member of ESAC, Ward is "very involved" with housing-related issues, she said, and volunteers on numerous housing committees in Halton. see Moving on p.23 Get hands-on training that pays.
