Check the new blacklist continued from p.1 Police are reminding residents to check the new National Stolen Device Blacklist before purchasing a used wireless device. Under the new program, prospective buyers can visit www.ProtectYourData.ca and enter the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number to find out whether the device has been reported lost or stolen. If the device is on the National Stolen Device Blacklist, which was launched by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association and its wireless carrier members on Sept. 30, it cannot be used on any participating Canadian network. The measure is intended to make smartphones a less valuable target for criminals and to stop Canadian consumers from paying for pre-owned phones they can't use because they have been reported lost or stolen. Anyone with information about the incident that occurred earlier this month is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4747, ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). 5 | Friday, October 18, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Stolen cellphones now recorded on new National Stolen Device Blacklist. | photo by Riziero Vertolli Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog) A 2014 schedule for meetings at Oakville Town Hall will see council and committees meet fewer times next year -- but Oakville Mayor Rob Burton says it will be of benefit to residents. The new schedule, approved by Oakville Town council this month, will see Town council, Planning and Development Services council, Administrative Services Committee (ASC) and Community Services Committee (CSC) meet on a four-week, rather than three-week, cycle. Town staff reported the new arrangement aims to make resident participation in meetings easier. Fewer Town Hall meetings is good for residents, says mayor and staff "We've listened to the feedback of our community groups," said Burton. "This new schedule will allow for even greater participatory democracy. Residents will have more time to review agenda materials, provide feedback, and prepare delegations to appear before council and standing committees." Under the new schedule, Planning and Development council agendas will be available two weeks prior to scheduled meetings; ASC and CSC agendas will be published 10 days prior to meetings as of Jan. 1, 2014.
