On Oct. 17, Halton District School Board trustees directed staff to undertake a boundary review for elementary schools in southwest Oakville, including Brookdale, Eastview, Gladys Speers, Oakwood, Pine Grove and W.H. Whatever the interim solution is, it will also allow time for funding to be secured for a new school in the future for southwest Oakville, something trustee Don Vrooman has vehemently been pursuing. "The boundary review takes about three months and doesn't threaten school closures," Vrooman told board members at the Oct. 17 meeting where his revised motion was passed. "An accommodation review takes at least a year and can be very divisive in the community." Southwest Oakville is currently experiencing problems in some schools where there aren't enough English-speaking students to fill classrooms to warrant offering both English and French Immersion studies. Yet École Pine Grove Public School, in particular, is expected to continue experiencing enrolment pressure unless a new school is built in the Lakeshore Woods community, funding for which has yet to be approved by the Ministry of Education. Pine Grove will reach its building and portable capacity by next September, and exceed its capacity by 2015, according to staff projections. Without a new school, an interim solution is needed for French Immersion to be introduced in other schools in southwest Oakville to provide some relief for Pine Grove. Shhhh...
