Our Sisters in Spirit vigil On Friday, Oct. 4, a sunset candlelight vigil to honour 600 missing and murdered aboriginal women and girls across Canada was held at Coronation Park. This was one of 200 held in the country. A statement read by Judy Rivard said: "First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women are loved and valued." Oct. 4 is dedicated to honouring the lives of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls and their support families who have been tragically touched by the loss of a loved one to violence. Together, the Oct. 4 Sisters in Spirit Vigils have become a movement for social change and a reminder that our sisters will not be forgotten. Those attending the local vigil bowed their heads in silent remembrance and sorrow. They shared comments such as -- "We must live up to our belief in human rights; Women's rights are human rights; I'm not going to be a bystander on this issue anymore; I'm going home to write to my Member of Parliament to demand a national public inquiry; It is unacceptable that Canadians have permitted this tragedy to happen." Wendy Belcher of Oakville, representing Amnesty International, shared her knowledge of a family that had an adopted aboriginal daughter who went missing in Vancouver. There was no police follow-up until the family appeared and the police realized that they were not aboriginal. The young woman was eventually identified as one of the women killed by Robert Pickton. One year ago, the Native Women's Association of Canada launched a petition calling for a National Public Inquiry. These petitions will be submitted to the federal government on Oct. 18 as part of a National Day of Action. This inquiry will be a crucial step in implementing a co-ordinated action plan to address the scale and severity of violence Aboriginal women and girls experience in Canada. Please take action to honour our Aboriginal sisters on this human rights issue. This impacts us all.
