Weil1 take thie Halton sehoQi board, every time Here's an idea: Why don't we take photographs of ail the., bare bottoms. besoins and assorted intimate parts of humant anatomy displayedin sorte of the great art painted and sculpted down'through the ages. Then we'll make a collage of ail] those photographs. ail that nudity. ail that lewdness. We'l present it to the galle'; and museum pmoprietors exhibiting thme pieces. When they realize what they have donc, they will shnivel in horror andi agrce with us. that ail such works should be banned from reproduction or display in any high scimool lemts. As weIl, of course, people under 18 wîil no longer bc ailowed in the offending museums. 'Mat sounds absurd, no doubt, to many of us, but it bears womrsomce simtiaritics to whate a Milton man and his foillawcrs secm intent on doing. Milton residents, and apparentiy many others eisewhere, have recently received a flyer that is highly critical of the novel Foxfire, which is being taught al Milton District High Scimoal. The pnimary author of the flyer, Jack ijuisman, has more than two pages of phrases pulled from Foxfire aalcluded therein, and ail the phrases so documented are ray or fi lied with swear- ing and objectionable comments. But no context is supplicd. no framnework withiti.which the author is attempting ta buiid scelles and plot. AIl that is ques- tion-able - when le stands alone anyway - is exploited for the ,purpose of having the book deleted from scimool study. That is noi credible ctmtcism, il is a hase and selective stan- dard, skewcd and shaped to serve political purposes. T'he flyci is equally crnticai of the Halion Board of Education, and vindictive in its treaillent of Graemne Bamen, the unfortu- naSe board superintendent who was caught up in a sex scandai. Mr. Baroett's judgement in relation ta alleged indiscretions - he was chargcd in a round-up after complaints of sexual sohici- talion aM a public park - may be in question. But thai does noS spcak ta hNs abilities or judgement whcn it cornes ta aversecing currculum ai the. Halton Board of ýducatîon. It also bears repeating that the charge against Mr. Bare was dropped when he agreed ta make a donation ta charity, which speaks ta tie relative significance of the crime in the eyes of law enforcement. Yet Mr. Huisman jumps on the opportuelliy ta suggest Mr. Barrett has "been ill for a lVng tim" in an attempt ta shore up his case for banning Foxfire. Such tactics al ta ha expectcd, ane wouid suppose, in these types of fights, but the side emplaying them cave lay no credible claîn ta the moral high grouned. Wbcn il cornes ta ccnsorship. and sensitivity, we'll take the Haltan Board af Education, and the English deparsmnent at Milton District H;gh Scimool, aver Mr. Huisman and his associ- ates.
