q. - su. PIROJECT WEEK A -- m W - m -mU.. &ugfusr i. sr- - é r to launch an attack on wetland kiler purpie losestrife during its prime. c The OFAH is calling on every available hand in the province to launch local control efforts on the deadly perennial plant. Traditionally, the plant Is full bloom during this week and is getting ready to set off mature seeds.. Each plant produces approximately 2.7 million seeds each year, whic travel to nearby wetlands and choke off invaluable fish and wlldlife habitat. No magicai solution is looming, but some practical ones are on-the hori- zon. Work às progressing with a number of Eumopean insects that have bis- toric-ay kept the plant under control on that continent. Three of the insects have been approved for release in Canada. A numbér of herbicides have proven effective in dry land control of loosestrife, but they reinain unregistered for that use. Initial research on herbicides now being tested in aquatic situations suggests an effective con- trol is possible there, too.
