Late surge carries Oakville rider to victory Kaitlyn Shikaze is glad she didn't give up. The 12-year-old Sunningdale Public School student mounted a second-half comeback to win the peewee 11-12 girls' race at the seventh and final mountain-bike race of the Plastiglas Ontario Cup Series recently at Barrie's Horseshoe Resort. The season-ending race also doubled as the provincial championship. "In the middle of the race I kind of gave up and thought second place was okay," said Shikaze. "Then I remembered my dad telling me at the beginning of the series that if you win provincials, you get a cool jersey... Back then, I thought it was impossible. Then I realized I had a chance to actually do that." Shikaze pushed herself to the limit in the final half of the 3.5-kilometre race to overtake Burlington's Jocelyn Stel and win by 23 seconds. Stel, a friend and training partner of Shikaze, held on to the series points title, edging Shikaze by two. "This whole season I've been competing with Jocelyn, and it's been really good," Shikaze said. "She won three of the races and I won three of the races." This was the first full season on the Ontario Cup Series for Shikaze, whose father Jeff finished third overall in the masters expert 45-49 men's point standings. The younger Shikaze said she has two idols in mountain biking: her dad, and 2012 Canadian Olympian Emily Batty. "Emily Batty is the best female mountain biker in Canada. One day, I want to become like her," said Shikaze, who races on the Cyclepath Oakville team. Another Oakville cyclist, Linda Shin, won the masters expert 30-39 women's race at provincials. Shin is a member of the Blacksmith Cycle team. Jeff Shikaze was fourth in the masters expert 45-49 men's race, and Cyclepath Oakville's Levi Ogryzlo was fifth in the peewee 11-12 boys' event. -- Jon Kuiperij, Beaver sports editor 27 | Friday, September 20, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville's Ben Fanelli was named captain for the Kitchener Rangers. He's also the founder of Head Strong: Fanelli 4 Brain Injury Awareness, which has raised the profile of -- and money for -- head injuries. Those efforts helped him secure the OHL and CHL humanitarian of the year award last season, a first in Rangers' history. Around the club, he's known for his compassion, often anonymously leaving Sudoku puzzles out to help concussed teammates during recovery. And being captain? It's been on his brain for a while. "It was always a dream, that's for sure," he said. "Now I have the chance to prove I can do it." Kaitlyn Shikaze won the final race of the Ontario Cup mountain bike series with a strong push in the second half of the 3.5 kilometre race. | Special to the Oakville Beaver NEXT PA DAY HOCKEYCAMP: NEXT PA DAY HOCKEYCAMP: FRI OCT 11, 2013 FRI OCT 11, 2013 Oakville Blades Jr. A Hockey Club 2013-14 Season Ticket Packages FOR $99 YOU GET!!
