St. Jude's Anglican Church has been recognized for its environmental efforts. The Oakville church has received an award for its outstanding efforts to green its community at Greening Sacred Spaces' inaugural Halton Peel Awards Celebration. The celebration was held at St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church in Oakville on Thursday, June 20. The organizers say St. Jude's has been a leader in terms of environmental and social justice initiatives. The church had an energy audit through which it learned several ways to save money and help the environment at the same time. St. Jude's recognized for green efforts Since the audit, the church began using an EnerStar refrigerator, switched to energyefficient lighting, added motion-sensor light switches and timers on external lights, installed low-flush toilets, insulated hot water pipes and invested in storm and double-glazed windows where it was possible. The church emails its newsletters when possible, its staff use the green and blue bins and the church uses its own compost in the gardens. A bike rack was installed on the property to encourage church-goers to cycle to church. The church celebrates Earth Hour each year with a concert in the dark and donates the proceeds to environmental and social justice groups.
