www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, August 21, 2013 | 4 Lack of funding spelled the end of Harbour Days by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff Oakville-based firm Infinity Communications says it did not want to see the local Bronte Harbour Days event disappear from the horizon of the west-end village, but a lack of funding did just that this summer. The early August festival, originally launched by the Bronte Business Improvement Association (BIA) in 2009, celebrated Bronte Harbour's marine heritage and the historic village's origins as a commercial fishery. It included an invitational sand-sculpting competition among other activities. Harbour Days was fully sponsored by the Bronte BIA for several years, said BIA chair Mary Roberts, but the local business association remained only as a presenting sponsor last year. Infinity Communications took over its organization in an attempt to put a life preserver on the festival; however, even that didn't help keep it afloat. "Last year, we took it from the Bronte BIA because nobody wanted to see it go away. In previous years, we actually did the event for the Bronte BIA, but we all had the luxury of a (seed) grant from Celebrate Ontario," said Leanne Bucaro, co-CEO of Infinity Communications. "Instead of seeing it go away last year, we wanted to try to support it, and keep it in Bronte, so we thought we'd try to do it ourselves because the BIA did not have the resources. "But unfortunately, we didn't get a grant to help continue that event and that financial model just wasn't feasible for us." Bucaro added, Infinity Communications "would love to bring back Harbour Days, if we could get some financial support for it, for sure." TV and cash stolen from Oakville hotel Halton police are investigating following the theft of electronics and money from the Country Inn, 2930 South Sheridan Way, last week. Some time between 11 p.m. Aug. 13 and 7 a.m. Aug. 14, suspects entered the hotel and stole a 27-inch television from the fitness room. Police said attempts were made to steal two larger televisions from the hotel's conference room, but these were bolted into the wall and the intruders were not able to get them loose. Money was also taken from the cash register at the hotel's front desk. Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4747, ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
