13 | Wednesday, August 21, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Fall Registration ARK is for kids on the run If your kids love running, adventures in the great outdoors and getting muddy, Adventure Running Kids (ARK) might be the perfect fit. New to Oakville this fall, ARK is a running and training program for boys and girls aged six to 14. ARK has already been established in five other southern Ontario communities with more than 500 participants this past spring. In Oakville's eight-week introductory session, ARK coaches will focus on map reading, agility, speed training and endurance. ARK combines trail running, night running, navigation, cross country running, obstacles and winter snowshoe running to create a fun, challenging eco-adventure. Coaches and leaders not only challenge and teach kids to be stronger, tougher and faster runners while having an appreciation and respect for the environment, but they also coach kids on the problem solving skills necessary in training, racing and life. ARK runs in the fall and spring with one training night per week for an hour. Weekly sessions focus on a theme such as running agility, speed training, route finding, running power and terrain running. Each child participates at his or her own comfort level and is not in direct competition with other participants. The only gear required is loose fitting, lightweight, easily-washable clothing in the warmer weather, with layers necessary as the temperature drops. Trail running shoes are recommended to handle loose and uneven terrain. Practices run every week unless there are weather alerts or the temperature dips to -15 degrees Celsius. As the daylight shortens, kids will be running with the use of headlamps one of the highlights of the fall session for participants; exercises may be modified in the dark but the emphasis is still on fun. Registration is open for the fall ARK session which begins September 9 and costs $40 with a $10 deposit required for a pinnie. ARK will be held on Monday evenings between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at a location to be announced. As ARK Oakville is volunteer-based, organizers are looking for parents to help with coaching.
