www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 22, 2013 | 24 Oakville Rangers product Barwell signs with Mississauga Steelheads Oakville's Jesse Barwell has signed with the Ontario Hockey League's Mississauga Steelheads. Barwell was drafted in the second round, 26th overall, by the Steelheads after totalling 34 goals and 79 points in 71 games last season for the OHL Cup champion Oakville minor midget AAA Rangers. "I was fortunate enough to have options, options that my family and I had to weigh seriously," Barwell said. "Education is really important to us, and I had to give serious consideration to the offers that were made by NCAA schools. However, in the end, after really productive discussions with the Steelheads and after weighing all my options, I knew that with the Steelheads I had a great opportunity to ensure my education while playing in the best developmental hockey league in the world." With the addition of Barwell, Mississauga has now signed its top three picks from this summer's draft. He is the latest in a line of Oakville players to suit up for the team, including last year's captain Stuart Percy, goalie Spencer Martin and last year's firstround pick Damian Bourne. Mississauga GM James Boyd said the 5-foot-11, 187-pound centre is "a smart, skilled player with a great work ethic. It is exciting to add a player of his calibre to our existing lineup." Barwell will join the Steelheads Aug. 28 for the opening day of training camp. The Oakville Lady Hawks U19-1 team finished an 18-4 season by winning the C Division at the Ontario Women's FIeld Lacrosse championships. | photo submitted FUTURE SHOP CORRECTION NOTICE We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers. Second U19 Lady Hawks team reaches quarter-finals continued from p.23 The U19-1 Lady Hawks, who finished the season with a record of 18-4, were the top-seeded team in the C Division. Members of the team are Madison Peltzer, Jaimie Rodriguez, Bella Triolo, Katie Quesnelle, Allison Czerny, Bailey Hill, Bridget Doyle, Delainy Doyle, Erin Murray, Thalia Zolis, Aurora Cordingley, Megan Hooper, Olivia Harwood, Lexi Doherty, Mackenzie Porter and Rachael Hardy. Jackie Noble, Ashley Rutz and Brent Harwood coach the team, Darlene Zolis is the trainer and Alison Doherty is the manager. Oakville's other U19 entry in the C Division at provincials, the Lady Hawks U19-2 squad, reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated with a 8-7 loss to Oshawa #3. Oshawa scored with five minutes remaining to break a 7-7 tie. Oakville U19-2 opened the tournament with a 9-7 loss to Kitchener-Waterloo 2, then bounced back to defeat Owen Sound 14-5 and advance to the quarterfinals. Ontario Women's Field Lacrosse featured four U19 divisions (A, B, C, D) this year. The C Division, the third tier of the four, included six teams. Oakville's C Division title last year came when there were only three divisions (A, B, C) at the U19 level. In just its fourth year of existence, the Oakville Lady Hawks girls' field lacrosse program is already the third-largest in Ontario Women's Field Lacrosse, trailing only Oshawa and Orillia. Oakville's U11 and U15 squads claimed bronze medals in their respective divisions at provincials earlier this year. "Oakville continues to grow and ascend higher in the ranks of OWFL play each year," said Lady Hawks director Brent Harwood, "so we're thrilled with the growth and improvements in results." -- With files from Jon Kuiperij Best Buy CORRECTION NOTICE NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE BEST BUY AUGUST 16 CORPORATE FLYER In the August 16 flyer, on page 15, the Bose QuietComfort® 15 Acoustic Noise-Cancelling Headphones (WebCode: 10173935) were advertised incorrectly.
