In partnership with the Torontoto-Niagara Tour des Trees eh! bike ride, the Oakville Canopy Club Silver Route portion was a leisurely, 22-kilometre, three-hour ride along Oakville and Burlington's tree-lined waterfront. Stops along the way provided cyclists with the opportunity to appreciate the urban forest and learn about Oakville's efforts to combat the effects the emerald ash borer (EAB) has on the tree canopy. Sunshine and smiles were in abundance as cyclists and spectators took part in the opening festivities, which included tree climbing, bucket truck rides, a horse-drawn logging demonstration, a drumming circle and a tree planting and dedication. Mayor Rob Burton was joined at the event by Oakville town councillors Pam Damoff, Dave Gittings and Roger Lapworth. Damoff also rode in the event, joining the more than 50 Toronto cyclists on route to Niagara and 35 Oakville-to-Hamilton Canopy Club riders. Funds raised through ride registration fees support the Canadian TREE Fund, which provides research and education related to arboriculture. The Oakville Canopy Club is a community outreach program, which educates residents about EAB and urban forestry initiatives. The Oakville Canopy Club can be found on Facebook, Twitter and at www.oakville.ca.
