OAK swimmers win Summer Games medals Sixth annual LOST Race Saturday Oakville Aquatic Club member Evan White won three individual medals in the first five days of competition at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. White claimed gold in the male 200-metre breaststroke and 200m butterfly while earning a bronze in the 400m individual medley. OAK teammate Gamal Assaad also won a medal for Ontario, finishing second in the male 200m butterfly. Assaad was also fifth in the 50m butterfly. Runner earns silver at Athletics Ontario meet Oakville resident Zaria Armstrong won a silver medal at the recent Athletics Ontario Bantam, Midget, Youth Championships at York University. Armstrong, a member of the Burlington Track Club, ran the midget girls' 100-metres in 12.59 seconds to place second and also turned in a fifth-place finish in the 200m. More than 100 people are expected to swim along the Lake Ontario shoreline of Oakville this weekend as they participate in the sixth annual LOST Race. Saturday's event, hosted by the Oakville-based Lake Ontario Swim Team, will feature a 3.8-kilometre course that begins at the water's edge at the foot of Maple Grove Drive and ends in Lakeshore Park, near the Navy Street Pier. Swimmers will compete in two divisions (wetsuit and non- wetsuit) and face the challenges of open-water swimming, such as water temperature (typically around 21 degrees Celsius), wind, waves, navigation, floating debris and other competitors. The race will begin at 8 a.m. The fastest swimmers will likely finish in approximately 45 minutes, with the slower ones expected to complete the course two hours later. The 3.8-km course is the same distance as the swim leg of the Ironman Triathlon. Burlington Blaze volleyball teams need coaches The Burlington Blaze Volleyball Club is seeking coaches for the upcoming 2013-14 season. The Blaze is a partner of the Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence, which will open at Mohawk College in September under the direction of Blaze technical director Matt Schnarr and founder Andy Nicholson. The Blaze offers support for coaching certification and the opportunity to work with experienced coaches and fitness specialists from post secondary volleyball.
