Canadian Open winner Snedeker says rafters actually `helped me out' continued from p.26 sightlines, but Paul couldn't help but chuckle when he was informed about the incident on his radio. "My first reaction was I laughed," he said. "It seemed like we had a Glen Abbey from years gone by. We haven't had people in the creek in eons. Early on in my days, there was a guy on a horse who came down the creek. There have been a couple rafters in the past, or people on inner tubes... Standing on 18, I thought all we need is someone to swim across the pond (by the 18th green), which we haven't had in a while." Members of the group, all of whom were from Oakville, co-operated with security and uniformed police officers when asked to exit the creek. No charges were laid, and it's not even clear whether any law was broken. Paul believes Sixteen Mile Creek is federal property, not the jurisdiction of Glen Abbey Golf Club, and police seemed to be of that understanding as well. "I don't know that you can (prevent it). It's how you handle it. They were in the line of sight of players, we asked them to get out of the way, and I think that's really all we can do," Paul said. "I'm not trying to promote it, by any means. But it was dealt with, and there's no need to do anything else." Snedeker offered an interesting spin on the incident when asked about it after the tournament. "That actually kind of helped, because we had a two- or threeminute delay there. The wind was really blowing hard, and it kind of died down by the time we hit," he said. "So it actually helped me out." An ideal setting, a star playing the lead role, a feel-good angle, an unexpected twist and a bit of comedy -- all elements that make for good theatre. That, and the strong crowd support, might make Golf Canada look more favourably at Glen Abbey as a candidate to host the Canadian Open once again in 2016. Even if Glen Abbey doesn't get the nod to host the tournament three years from now, it certainly will again at some point. "Glen Abbey is always going to be part of the rotation," said Paul. "It's been home for 26 years, it produced another great winner and the golf course is certainly worthy of it. "I think Glen Abbey is probably... the best spectator course in Canada, with the caveat that I haven't seen every golf course in Canada," he added. "There is not a perfect venue. When you go to Royal Montreal (where the tournament is next year) or Hamilton, there's more property where you can do more things, but you don't have the best way to get around the property. Mack Blewett's 37-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hibbert on the final play of the first half accounted for the only points in the game for the Longhorns, who finish the campaign with an 0-7-0-1 (seven regulation losses and an overtime defeat) record. Hibbert finished the game with 99 receiving yards, Eric Dowling caught three passes for 69 yards and Lindell Merraro made six receptions for 52 yards as Oakville picked up 15 first downs in the game but was burned by four turnovers. Greg Slocum had a game-high six tackles to lead the Longhorns defence. The NFC playoffs begin this weekend with the Toronto Raiders visiting the Montreal Transit, the Durham Hawkeyes travelling to Ottawa, the Sault Ste. Marie Steelers hosting the Sudbury Spartans and the Tri City Outlaws entertaining the Sarnia Imperials.
