Police patrol Millstone Park after gazebo set ablaze by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 11 | Friday, July 26, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton police said they would add Millstone Park to their list of properties receiving extra attention this summer after late-night partiers recently set the park's gazebo on fire. Uniform and plainclothes officers have been conducting increased patrols at a number of Oakville parks as part of an initiative dubbed Project Nightwatch. Nightwatch is intended to curb illegal drug and alcohol use, which often increases in town parks as the weather gets warmer. Millstone initially was not singled out for additional patrols, however, in recent weeks residents have made a number of complaints about loud, late-night parties taking place there. On Friday, July 5, police said, a gazebo in Millstone was set on fire. It was extinguished before any significant damage was done. An area resident said a number of youths set fire to a garbage can in the park over the week- end, but police could not confirm this. While Millstone is now part of Project Nightwatch, Halton police Sergeant Paul Craig said he could not guarantee officers would be in the park each and every night. Residents who witness incidents in Millstone are asked to contact police at 905-825-4747, ext. 5155. Bike lane put in, bike lane torn up by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff eLementArY Learn about HSC's A White Oaks Boulevard resident and his neighbours are fuming after a bike lane -- painted along White Oaks Boulevard Sunday night -- was torn up by construction the following day. Ray Corrigan watched the bike lane come and go from his home and called the exercise a ridiculous waste of taxpayers' money, which could easily have been avoided. "We knew this road construction was going to happen because they've put all this fencing up to protect the trees," said Corrigan. "Why spend this money putting lines down when they are going to cut the road up?" Enrico Scalera, director of the Town's Roads and Works Operations said the Town was responsible for painting the bike lane, but Halton Region was the party undertaking the road construction to replace a water main in the area. He said the Town repaints its pavement markings annually and noted staff usually coordinate with the Region to avoid situations like this one. In this case, Scalera said the water main construction was not taking place along all of White Oaks Boulevard, although much of it is from Trafalgar Road to Eton Place. He also said the Town was not only painting a bike lane, but all of the pavement markings along the street. "The pavement markings were not in good condition," said Scalera. "So from a safety perspective it made sense to do the road even though it was going to be under construction. The construction is going to last until the end of October. That's a long time to go without having noticeable pavement markings on the road." From a cost perspective, Scalera said repainting a bike lane is not excessively expensive costing approximately 30 cents per metre. proGrAmS www.hsc.on.ca at At HSC, Student tudent SuCCeSS iS importAnt impor to me.
