www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, July 11, 2013 | 22 Gilgan sees Mattamy name on new neonatal clinic by Jan Dean Metroland Media Mississauga Health "Connected to your Community" Rubina Haq says a hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is "a place no parent ever wants to go." However, she says, the new, well-equipped unit at Mississauga Hospital will make things much easier for anxious parents of newborns who require special care. Recently, Haq spoke at the official opening of the hospital's new NICU. Accompanying her were her husband Ron Haq and their 13-month-old daughter, Salma. Salma is the reason the Port Credit couple know about NICUs. Born prematurely (at 35 weeks) and weighing 1,611 grams, Salma spent 52 days in Mississauga Hospital's old NICU before heading home almost a year ago. Fertility Problems? Pregnancy Discomfort? The old NICU was 45 years old and, at 2,100 square feet, was far too crowded. Infants were side-by-side in incubators, while parents shared chairs and there was no privacy or quiet space for anyone. Thanks to a $1.5 million donation from Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of Oakvillebased Mattamy Homes, there's a new 6,200-sq.-ft. NICU at the hospital. Jane Gildner, manager of Women's and Children's Services for Trillium Health Partners, says the new unit is large enough that a parent could spend the night in a fold-out chair beside their infant child. The new unit can accommodate up to 22 newborn patients. Kathryn Hayward-Murray is vice-president of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Executive for Trillium Health Partners. She says 13 per cent of the 4,000 babies born at Mississauga Hospital spend some time in the NICU. "Babies and their parents require a homelike atmosphere to thrive," she said. The first tiny patients were transferred into the new unit on May 15 and everything has gone smoothly. Peter Willson, chair of the Trillium Health Centre Foundation's board of directors, describes the NICU as family-centred. Each infant and family has their own space. There's also a family room where parents can fix themselves a snack, take a rest, shower or do laundry. He said Gilgan's donation was critical to funding the $4 million project. Gilgan, who lives in Port Credit, made the donation after touring the old NICU. "The old space was so crowded you felt like you were taking up air the little ones needed," said Gilgan. A plaque outside the NICU acknowledges Gilgan's contribution. The successful builder is known for his philanthropy. Last year, he donated $40 million to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto -- the largest single donation that facility had ever received. Isn't It About Time For A Hearing Test???
