THE GREAT GARDEN EVENT The 4 week sale where the savings get bigger but the selection gets smaller. www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, July 10, 2013 | 10 60% OFF July 11 - 17 Program aids people navigating the system continued from p.9 quired hospital admission. Navigators work with youths and their families to establish goals and the find the services to support it. Goals have to come from the client, not the Navigators, said Navigator Tingka Heusser. It is often difficult for families because there is not a one-size-fits-all service and wait times can be six months to a year. "For our families, who are having a lot of difficulties with their kids, six months, that's tremendous. A week is too much sometimes," Heusser said. Getting lost in the system while waiting for services is a concern, Heusser said, so when children do have to wait to get the proper services, the Navigators stay connected with the families. They look for ways to support families while they wait, such as finding them therapeutic services. The Navigators also go out into the community to do the work, meeting families and their children in their homes and schools. "Wherever we are going, we are there with the kids and families so that they have somebody there with them, while they're going through their transition, or else they don't make their appointments, they don't go there," said Heusser. Sometimes youths are just not interested in seeking help. However, the Navigators don't just let them go. They either work with their parents or continue to try to connect with the youths, sometimes taking months before the connection happens. They also provide support in the Emergency department's Urgent Care Clinic. "It's for helping clients who need help right now, but there's nobody there or the services aren't available for them," Heusser said. The organization also works with youths who come through emergency, but who do not necessarily need inpatient support and are on a waitlist for outpatient services, Heusser said. Youths from across Halton go to the Oakville hospital and Heusser admitted there are few mental health services available to children in Halton. FINAL WEEK! 50% 40% OFF! OFF!
