Many winners humble in accepting accolades continued from p.3 The Oakville Historical Society's Wendy Belcher won the Heritage and History Award. Belcher has been in the Oakville Historical Society since 2003. She is an interpreter at the Thomas House Museum, leads ghost walks throughout the year and is co-founder of the Oakville chapter of Amnesty International. Diane Daly received the Individual Volunteer Award for lending fundraising experience, event organizing skills and legal knowledge to numerous organizations in Oakville and beyond. She volunteers as a dispute resolution officer in the Milton Court. She was a director for the Halton County Law Association and has helped with many pro-bono cases. Daly has also served as president of the Zonta Club of Oakville, bringing increased funds, membership and awareness to the group. Additionally, she was a chair of SAVIS (Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Service) Halton for six years and currently serves as director-at-large for the Board of Armagh, a transition house for women and their children who have suffered domestic violence. Michael Lansdown received the Senior Award for his work Wendy Belcher with the Halton Multicultural Council's English Conversation Circle. The group meets Fridays with Lansdown also organizing barbecues, field trips and other outings for this group of immigrated seniors. As a strong supporter of the former Oakville Seniors Advisory Committee, Lansdown wrote requests to both Oakville Transit and council asking for free transit for seniors. These efforts led to the creation of free transit for seniors in Oakville on Mondays. Lansdown also took home the Provincial Senior of the Year Award, which recognizes a senior who has enriched the life of their community. Oakville Town council nominated Lansdown, a former Town councillor, for this honour. "It was volunteering that took me on to Town council and got me involved in many of the things I did and am still doing in Oakville. I really want to thank Town council, many of the councillors with whom I had the pleasure of serving with back in 2003, for this huge award." St. Thomas Aquinas' Peace and Justice Club earned the Youth Award. The group of 150 students promotes compassion and equality through awareness of and providing for the needs of others. Every year since 2003, the group has raised approximately $20,000 to $50,000 to support local organizations like the YMCA, Oakville Hospital Foundation, oomama, Fareshare food bank, Kerr Street Ministries and Habitat for Humanity. 13 | Friday, June 14, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com JOIN ENBRIDGE FOR A COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE A STEP BEYOND IN CARE DO YOU HAVE: Salima Kassam Reg.
