www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 14, 2013 | 8 Impossible not to be proud of Canada's war effort continued from p.1 "Seeing all the different guns and old materials they used was very interesting." On June 6, the students participated in remembrance ceremonies at the beach with Garth Webb Student Mitchell Peberdy, 14, laying a wreath at a nearby home liberated by Canada's Queens Own Rifles back in 1944. The group also visited a monument to the Queens Own Rifles, which was once a German bunker. This bunker inflicted heavy casualties on the Canadians at Juno Beach before it was taken and now features a plaque commemorating the Canadian lives lost. "There were two Second World War veterans at the house and they laid wreaths also and saluted to their fallen comrades," said Peberdy. "Later, we went down the beach a little to the (monument bunker) and the veterans stood up and saluted and one of them read the poem on the memorial. That was pretty moving." They also had a chance to thank the veterans for their service. OAKVILLE, ON QEW Speers Wallace The group also attended the Juno Beach Centre for its 10th anniversary. The centre, which opened June 6, 2003, promotes the war effort made by all Canadians during the Second World War. Burlington resident and Second World War veteran Garth Webb founded the centre before passing away in 2012. Garth Webb Secondary School was named in his honour. During the ceremony, students helped Webb's partner, Lise Cooper, unveil a plaque at the centre commemorating Webb's life. Bonner read a poem by Webb titled, You Bought Me Time. The students also used their trip to Juno to complete a special project initiated in Canada. Each had been assigned to learn about a Canadian soldier killed on DDay and buried at the Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery near Caen. They wrote a biography on the soldier, laminated it and took it to France. During the trip, the students located their soldier's grave, paid their respects and left their report behind. Bonner described this experience as one of the more emotional parts of the trip. "It was neat for me to actually be there and see the grave of the soldier I had written about, whose life I had learned about," she said. Bonner and Peberdy said the French people they encountered were deeply grateful of the role Canada played in liberating their country. Garth Webb Principal Larry O'Malley said it was impossible not to come back with an increased sense of pride over what Canada did during the Second World War.
