www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 28, 2013 | 8 We need `beauty in our lives' continued from p.6 nationally and are a protected species · Mississauga has two municipal golf courses, Burlington has two and Hamilton has three. Oakville has none. Leave Saw Whet and Deerfield golf courses alone · A round of golf on the weekend costs less than half of what it costs at Glen Abbey. Why are the courses that ordinary people can afford being targeted? Is the Glen Abbey Golf Course threatened with redevelopment? · The Ontario government appears to support keeping the population healthy, particularly seniors, to reduce health-care costs. Over 90 per cent of Deerfield members are seniors. It is counterproductive to reduce their opportunities for healthy exercise · The same can be said of the efforts to reduce the number of obese Ontarians · My husband and I are golfers. Our friends and family are golfers. I golfed Saw Whet and Deerfield this month. I want to be able to continue to do so · Losing local golf courses will increase traffic on local roads and remove this contribution to the local economy · The area occupied by Deerfield could not support housing due to its proximity to sewage treatment works. Destruction of this beautiful golf course would only see replacement by office and business buildings. This would be a wanton waste of something valuable for no good reason · Developers may have purchased Saw Whet Golf Course, gambling on the idea that it would be rezoned for housing. There is no reason why this should have any relevance to planning · These places are beautiful. Beauty nourishes the soul. We need some beauty in our lives, too. Amanda Towe, Oakville Development is counter-productive Re: Deerfield's development is short-sighted, Oakville Beaver, Wednesday, June 19, 2013. We, the taxpayers, are being asked to add about $400 per year per household in taxes/ charges paying for solutions to gridlock in the GTA, while our elected officials not only allowed Richview golf course to be replaced by development some years ago but are now adding Deerfield and Saw-Whet to the chopping block, eliminating more greenspace. This is going to add 300-plus cars to rushhour gridlock. Plus a further 100 or more cars with golfers seeking a golf course elsewhere. Brilliant. C. Davey, Oakville THE SUMMER HEAT ARE YOU READY?
