Enbridge confident inspection tools will suffice continued from p.9 affect those kinds of things." Oakvillegreen past-president Liz Benneian said the conservation organization is concerned about the pipeline and remains convinced an oil spill will happen as it is just a matter of when. Benneian said the pipeline not only comes into contact with Sixteen Mile Creek, but virtually every major creek system in the Toronto area. Wasylyshen said she has heard people's concerns about the age of the pipeline, but said it is regularly inspected with special tools that travel through the pipe searching for instabilities that could lead to a future breach. "This is all preventive. This is not looking for evidence of things that are issues today. This is looking down the road to see where preventive maintenance is required," she said. "Those inspection tools are constantly giving us an update on the state of the pipeline." In the event of a leak, Wasylyshen said, it would be detected very quickly because of ultrasonic flow meters, pressure transmitters and temperature transmitters in place in the pipeline. There are also three shut-off valves in place in the Halton area, which can be triggered from the Enbridge Control Centre in Edmonton. The valves will stop the flow of oil within three minutes after receiving the remote command to close. Enbridge also gives detailed training to emergency responders in municipalities near the pipeline, informing them where the pipeline is, what is flowing through it and how to deal with it, if it leaks out of the pipe. The NEB hearing, which will consider Enbridge's proposals, will be held in the fall. If approved, Enbridge expects the pipeline flow to be reversed in September 2014. 13 | Wednesday, June 26, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com THE GREAT GARDEN EVENT The 4 week sale where the savings get bigger but the selection gets smaller. 40% OFF June 27th July 3rd Can you afford to wait? 50% OFF!
