www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 21, 2013 | 4 See Carousel of Nations with a visit to Kerr by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff Kerr Village will kickstart summer tomorrow (Saturday, June 22) as it holds its annual Summer Celebration and the Carousel of Nations multicultural festival. "Find yourself in Kerr Village and tour the world in a day, is my old tagline, because literally you can see a bunch of different countries and you can see a bunch of different acts and between the two locations you get a really good day. And it's free, which is awesome," said Richard Messer, executive director of Kerr Village BIA. The 15th annual Summer Celebration is hosted by the Kerr Village BIA, while the Carousel of Nations is organized by the Carousel of Nations Multicultural Association (CNMA). The two groups began holding the events together five years ago. "We feel the Carousel of Nations is a good organization and we felt that it was a good opportunity to engage and enhance an already a popular event within Kerr Village," Messer said. Messer said a road closure costs the same amount of money for one event or two and that the BIA was already paying for a number of services, so Left, Alex Kolodziej, 14, flies in The Beaver Has Landed skateboarding competition during Kerr Village Summer Celebration 2012. Maggie Ding performs during last year's Carousel of Nations celebration at the festival. This year's edition is tomorrow (Saturday). Oakville Beaver file photos adding capacity for the extra people wasn't a problem. Now, the festival will see thousands of people visit Kerr Street. The Summer Celebration will feature live music, the ninth annual Beaver Has Landed Skateboarding Competition, a KidsZone that includes games, bouncy castles and face-painting. The live music will include The Sanctuary Band, The Lion Dance, The Key Frames, The Wood- shed Orchestra, The Weber Brothers, Ginger St. James, Stu Heydon Blues Band, The Neil Young'uns and Glory Days. Glory Days is a Bruce Springsteen tribute band. The Carousel of Nations will fea- ture more than 30 countries, each showcasing unique cultures. The festival celebrates the cultural diversity of Oakville, as well as Halton and beyond. The event is a collaboration between local ethno-cultural groups, professional and amateur multicultural artists, the Halton Regional Police Service, local businesses, government and corporate sponsors. Carousel of Nations will feature a cultural performance stage, as well as pavilions throughout the village. Combining the two events, Messer said, is good for local tourism. "Ultimately, the goal of tourism in Oakville is to bring people into the community. Messer invites everyone to visit the Kerr Village festival. "This is the first summer event. We're at the summer solstice. It's going to be a gorgeous weekend. It's an opportunity for people to come from all over Halton region to come visit the fine community of Kerr Village, which is in the heart of Oakville," Messer said. The festival will be in the area of Kerr Street and Lakeshore Road. It runs from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., with performances running all day. For more information, visit www. carouselofnations.ca.
