James Ian Stothart (left) and Tom Griffith (fourth from right) gather for a photo with their Brentwood College School senior men's eights teammates after winning the Calder Cleland Trophy at the recent Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association championships in St. Catharines. | photo submitted Oakville rowers win $250K trophy Oakville residents Tom Griffith and Ian Stothart recently helped Brentwood College School win the Calder Cleland Trophy as senior men's varsity eights champions at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association championships in St. Catharines. Brentwood, a co-educational independent boarding school located on Vancouver Island, finished the 1,000-metre course in a time of 2:45.24. Brockville Collegiate placed second in 2:50.70. The senior men's varsity eights race is typically 2,000m in length, but wind delays forced the shortening of the course. Winners were also determined by heat times in the semifinals, rather than a final race. The Calder Cleland Trophy is Canada's most valuable sports award, a 30-inch high jug reportedly valued at more than $250,000. The trophy was created in 1853 by goldsmiths and silversmiths in England as a gift for the Scottish-born Empress Eugenie upon her marriage to Louis Napolean of France. Stothart has attended Brentwood for four years and has also won two silver medals and a bronze at previous CSSRA events. He will attend Western University this fall to study computer engineering and continue his rowing career. Griffith is a Grade 11 student who intends to return to Brentwood next season. Both row for the Don Rowing Club during the summer. Grade 10 student Jason Hunter, also of Oakville, won bronze medals in the junior 4+ and 8+ events. Brentwood has sent crews to the CSSRA championships since 1972, winning 82 CCSRA titles and a record 13 Calder Cleland Trophy victories.
