www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 13, 2013 | 14 Deerfield superintendent not happy with Merton Lands plans by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The Town of Oakville recently unveiled some of the planning options it has for properties located in the Bronte Road/QEW area, known as the Merton Lands, and some residents are not liking what they see. The 234-hectare area, made up of the Saw Whet Golf Course and Deerfield Golf Course; Fourteen Mile Creek and natural heritage features associated with Bronte Creek; the Mid-Halton Water Pollution Control Plant; and the Halton Regional Run Date: Mar 14, 2013 Mississauga News/Oakville Today (5.145" x 5.714") Full Colour EOR#5355 Centre, is the subject of a Town planning study intended to determine what type of development would be best and where. Deerfield Golf Club Superintendent Ian McIsaac said he is not happy with the three options presented by the Town so far, which, he says, basically take away all the area's green space with the exception of the creek. "What are we doing to our town? It is a tragedy in my opinion," said McIsaac. "These plans would remove everything, except for the creek, which is the only spot they can't develop. Of the 132 acres of space It is a tragedy in my opinion. These plans would remove everything, except for the creek, which is the only spot they can't develop. Of the 132 acres of space that Saw Whet took up -- that was gone and then of the 115 acres on this property -- all this was gone too. Deerfield Golf Club superintendent Ian McIsaac that Saw Whet took up -- that was gone and then of the 115 acres on this property (Deerfield) -- all this was gone too." Town staff said that with the private sale of the Saw Whet lands and the Ontario government looking to sell the Deerfield property, it makes sense to put planning guidelines for these areas in place so the Town does not suddenly find itself responding to development not in keeping with the surrounding area. The Town's Manager of Current Planning, Charlie McConnell, said the three options, which he emphasized are not set in stone, each call for the protection of the Fourteen Mile Creek environmental lands. He said for the Saw Whet lands, located in the northern section of the study area, all options look at putting planning guidelines in place that would permit residential development. "That's one of the objectives we are trying to fulfill here, to get a balance of appropriate land uses that will sustain a complete community. So for residential we're looking at from low to medium to not necessarily high, but higher density. We want to make sure there is an appropriate mix of residential land use options that cater to a cross section of the population," said McConnell. "There has to be a road network to support the adequate movement of traffic throughout the area. So you will see that being fairly consistent throughout all three plans." see Deerfield on p.16 $ HEAVY BERBER CARPET 0 .99 $ sq ft & up BRING IN THIS AD AND... 45oz 100% NYLON CARPET PLUS We will pay the equivalent of the HST for you when you purchase our regular priced, in-stock Flooring only.
