Many players thanked for scoring new sports facilities continued from p.3 community supporters teamed up to form Spirit of Support (SOS), which launched a fundraising campaign to refurbish the field. "Close to a million dollars was needed to complete this project. And guess what? We did it," said Dan Ferrone, SOS chair, a former Canadian Football League hall of famer and Blakelock graduate. SOS partnered with the Halton Learning Foundation, Halton District School Board and community members, including area councillors Pam Damoff and Cathy Duddeck. All championed the cause, which led to the refurbishment of the athletic fields, which includes the main field and a smaller practice field, a track around the main field, new bleachers and a score clock. Oakville MP Terence Young said there are many people behind the achievement. "The champions of this project are the Spirit of Support, the parent group and grads who put this together and Dean Barnes who runs the school and then goes to meetings at night to improve this school, and the Halton Learning Foundation and the Halton District School Board," he said. Young said the federal government has no real tradition of supporting school initiatives, but when he saw the application for federal funding for this project, he was happy to support it. "Bring us projects where the community is already contributing and we'll see if we can top it up and make it happen," he told those attending. While Young remained modest, others were quick to thank him for his help. "I'd like to thank Terence again. In spite of his modesty, he's a great part of making this field come true," said area trustee Don Vrooman. Vrooman also addressed the students, saying, "This is probably better than Grade 10 civics, seeing Terence Young here, our MP for Oakville, and the things that the federal gov- ernment can do for us locally." Karmel Sakran, chair of Halton Learning Foundation committee, congratulated everyone who contributed. "This is a glowing example of what my father taught me as a young child. He told me one hand does not clap alone," he said. "It takes a little bit from everybody to make something real and, at the Halton Learning Foundation, our mission is to ensure our students have the best learning experience possible. Physical health and activity certainly is a critical ingredient in that development of our future leaders of tomorrow." The new field is expected to be ready for use within a few weeks. inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com HUGE SELECTION NEW OUTDOOR COLLECTIONS HAVE ARRIVED CLEARANCE ON SELECT FLOOR MODELS 6 25 Artscene Classified 22 29 *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com New Patients & Emergencies Welcome FAMILY, COSMETIC & IMPLANT DENTISTRY FREE Mon-Wed 10-7 Thursday 10-5 Friday 10-3 Saturday 9-3 · Cleaning & Check-ups · White fillings · Root Canals · Crown & Bridge · Implants · Braces/Invisalign · Dentures · Gum Treatment · Wisdom Teeth Removal · Laughing gas/Sedation Various sizes and colours TEETH WHITENING WITH NEW PATIENT VISIT Limited time offer to new patients 18 years and older, following a complete examination and a professional cleaning.
