PHOTO COURTESY OF MILTON FIRE DEPARTMENT BACKHOE BLAZE: Milton firefighters battle a blaze at a pallet factory near Trafalgar Road and Hwy. 401 yesterday morning after a backhoe caught fire. There were no injuries and the operator of the backhoe likely prevented a more serous fire by backing the machine away from a large pile of pallets when he first noticed the smoke and flames. It's believed a broken hydraulic line is to blame. Damage is estimated at $50,000. Man charged in crime spree By Stephanie Hounsell CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF A Milton man faces a slew of charges including multiple counts of kidnapping in connection with a multi-million-dollar crime spree involving thefts of tractor-trailer loads. Peel Regional Police arrested 10 suspects last week as part of 'Project Kingpin,' which police started in July in response to a series of tractor-trailer-related robberies and kidnap- pings. There were 12 robberies believed to be connected that took place between March and August, said Peel Regional Police Const. Jodi Dawson. Most of them happened in Peel. None were in Milton. During the incidents, victims - mostly security guards or truck drivers at the target- ed truck yards - were assaulted and held against their will. As they were being held, the property contained in the trailers was stolen, states a press release issued by Peel police. None of the victims was injured. Loads containing electronics, appliances and tobacco products were targeted, Dawson said. The total value of the stolen property is estimated to be millions of dollars. "It's huge. We can't even put a dollar value on it, which is why we said (in the press release) millions and millions worth (of property) was taken," Dawson said. A portion - about $1.6 million worth of Imperial Tobacco products and $65,000 worth of appliances - has been recovered. Dawson said that's "nothing in the grand scheme" of what was stolen. A 39-year-old Milton man has been charged with six counts of kidnapping, as well as multiple counts each of robbery con- spiracy to commit an indictable offence, theft over $5,000, use of an imitation firearm, pos- session of property obtained by crime and possession of stolen property, as well as one count of break and enter. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday at Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. The other suspects hail from across the GTA and face similar charges.
