Daily hospital parking to double starting next week _2 - By Tim Foran CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF The daily parking rates at Milton District and Georgetown hospitals will double start- ing next week, but the cbange will mean a sligbt benefit for visitors parking less than an bour at the facilities. Halton Healtbcare Services (HHS), the corporation that oversees the two bospitals, plans to adjust its parking fees to $2.75 per haIt hour, withi a $14 daily maximum, [rom the current $7 flat rate charge. HHS will also self $18 day passes, and deeply discounted $40 weekly passes and $65 monthly passes that give holders in-and-out privileges and wbich can be used intercbangeably at al tbree hospital sites. The new costs are in fine with what the corporation is already cbarging at its Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital site and is similar to whats charged at otber GIA- area hospitals. However, the bike could cause some con- sternation for Milton and Georgetown resi- dents wbo have less public transit opportuni- tics to get to their local bospitals thon rcsi- jdents in south Halton, Peel or Toronto. Milton Transit only bas one bus route that goes to the bospital while Georgetown does- n't bave a standard transit service. Parking lees collccted by hospitals in Ontario cover the cost of building, mainiain- ing and administering sucb lots. Any extra revenue is used to support local hospital pro- grams and services. The Ministry of Healîh doesn't provide any funding for hospital parking lots as it sees the [acilities as a rev- enue generating activity, simiular to cafeteria and preferred accommodation services. HHS is currently investing $600,000 into its parking facîlities in Milton, including paving, installation ol pay station machincs and the creation of 30 new spots,. Approximately $400.000 is beîng spent ai Georgetown and $700.000 in Oakvillc loi- similar improvemenia. Due to tbe capital improvements, i he hos- pital corporation doesn't expect to sec any profit [rom the increased parking fees in Milton and Georgetown for two to three years. HHS took in about $1.4 million in net parking revenue at its three sites last year. Hospital volunteers will continue to receive [ree parking. The corporation also plans to retain ils shori-termn parking meters in Milton for the time being, said a hospital sl-îkcspersoni tllos( incter- , c rrcnitlxc (ixtîgu 50 cents lot 10 mninutcs, 85 cenis loi 20t iii- utes or $2.50 for a 30-minute maximum.
